The BBC have just posted a story on the website that they're re-releasing several of the DVDs in new packaging and at a lower price, aimed at new viewers to get them acquainted with the classic series.

Maybe they'll fix the missing effects on Remembrance of the Daleks!

....and the packaging for the Five Doctors?

Apparently these dvds will just be the existing releases with a new cardboard slipcase put over the top of the current packaging.

Oh, erm, right. What's the point of that?

So far only Robots Of Death doesn't seem to have been digitally remastered

Well apparently its to encourage fans of the new series to start buying the classic series dvds as well. The reissue covers bear a passing resemblance to the new series vanilla releases, although I doubt that it's going to actually work.

Rolling Eyes Why not just advertise both at the end of each episode shown on BBC 1 now like they did years ago:

"DVD's of the current series of Doctor Who along with classic Doctor Who series are available on BBC DVD now"

That may be but here's the bottom line.PEOPLE THINK THE NEW SERIES IS BETTER THAN THE OLD ONE.And that's wrong.I'd rather have a bubble wrap monster with an excellent plot than something like Jagrafess or the Absorbaloff who never does anything.

Slightly off-topic,but what the new series should do is make one of those long openings like the japanese have. Laughing

Your opinion is that all the people who like and watch the new series are wrong?

Breathtaking arrogance.

Can anything strictly be said to have not been "digitally remastered" if it's been put on DVD? Moot point, that, anyway: http://www.purpleville.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/rtwebsite/robotsdvd.htm

If the order of DVDs listed on the Doctor Who Restoration Team website is to be trusted, it was the second DVD release after The Five Doctors.

I think that may be right, for a start as I mentioned above the error of putting "Who" instead of "Doctor" for any subtitled captions on screen where The Doctor wasn't in shot but was speaking, the actual subtitle captions themselves have a faint semi transparent box round them & are not always centred.

The titles also have alot of hair & dust that on them which has been tidied up on all other releases. The theme used on the animation before the menu comes up is different as well, on this disc it is a snippet of the Pertwee/Baker titles whereas the rest of the DVD's use the Davison music.

Also they don't really shout about the fatures as much on the back mainly as there aren't many, I'm sure one of them is "Animated menus" Laughing and Tom Baker's picture is different to all other releases

To be honest I think there both as good as each other but to compare them is a bit wrong, mainly as the newer ones are doen much differently. For example the old ones have multipart stories, the current series has a 2 two parter stories at most, but mainly they are self contained one off episodes. I actually wonder why they don't just keep the two parters as the same name for each part and just call them "part 1 & 2" rather than two complete different titles for each part.

There's also the differences between the Tardis', in the original it have coridoors & other rooms like a normal spaceship, so far in the current ones all we have seen is the main controls & not much else except for when Tennant was choosing his costume.

Just looked on the BBC Doctor Who website:

The new covers:

Now that just wont do, the cover doesn't match at all Wink (I do realise that they are slip on covers). I just hope they have taken this opportunity to update the Five Doctors cover as well. Doesn't matter either way although I like the bit that says "lower price" Very Happy

I've often wondered about this, and I guess they have different titles so as not to put off viewers who might have missed the first part. For example if 'Human Nature - Part 2' came up on screen and someone had missed part one, they're probably less likely to watch. Also the first few seasons of the classic series followed a similar pattern with a different title for each episode so it could be said it harks back to that.

Yay a cheap version of the 1996 "TV Movie" with "cardboard" cover and new design slipcase, sounds nifty.
