Seemingly if they're looking for producers they haven't even got an idea of what's to replace Bungalow. Don't think Stephen and Holly have much to worry about just yet!

Not quite. I'd be reasonably sure they'll already have a format put together, which is why they are advertising for series producers to run the show when it goes to air Rolling Eyes

It asks for ideas and suggestions, plus in the advert on production base (need to be a member to get full views), it's got a further spec, even saying "to create the next saturday morning hit"

...which technically any successful candidate for the job would be doing, by series producing a format which the BBC had already created. Of course it asks for ideas and suggestions - that is what they pay series producers for.

On the preview just before SS this morning, Holly opened up saying "Saturday Showdown starts in a few minutes" explaning whats coming up and she kept giggling at something at the end of the preview she said "MOM will be back here shortly with spongebob" *cue adverts*

She didnt correct herself afterwards unless she didnt have time.

CiTV's future on ITV1 in doubt

Jason Deans, broadcasting editor
Friday May 12, 2006

ITV director of television Simon Shaps has given the clearest signal yet that the broadcaster will look to axe children's programmes from ITV1's weekday afternoon schedule.

Mr Shaps said ITV would honour its existing public service broadcasting commitments to children's programming with media regulator Ofcom, but added that the broadcaster could not ignore the increasing competition faced by the CiTV children's programming bloc on weekday afternoons, where it is up against Channel 4's Countdown and Deal or No Deal.

Mr Shaps said it was not clear to him where CiTV programming would be scheduled in future across ITV's portfolio of channels.

There has been speculation about the future on ITV1 of children's programming, on which the broadcaster spends around £40m a year, since ITV launched its CiTV digital channel in March.

When the digital service launched, CiTV on ITV1 in the afternoons was cut back from two hours to 90 minutes a day, finishing at 4.30pm rather than 5pm.

However, ITV would most likely have to negotiate with Ofcom over any more radical move - such as shifting CiTV off ITV1 in the afternoon altogether.

ITV is currently committed to broadcasting a minimum of eight hours of children's output a week on ITV1.

"We still have public service obligations [on children's programming] which we intend to honour," Mr Shaps said, after making his first public speech since taking up his job in September at a Royal Television Society dinner last night.

"At the same time, that time of day has become a very, very competitive battleground. We can't overlook what the opposition is doing and we are looking to maximise audiences.

"Over time, it isn't clear to me at what time, in what slot, in what volume, children's programmes will be offered by ITV."

Saturday Showdown / MOM will end in July.

I assume this is part of ITV's initiative to have production companies fund their own commissions if they don't have the honour of making it into ITV's primetime line-up. Surely this is just slightly mad? This is the way it's always been - programme gets commissioned > broadcaster (in this case ITV) gives them their budget > programme gets aired. Now it's programme gets commissioned > find your own flamin' budget > programme gets the privledge of being aired on a channel which is fastly going to the dogs.

I don't know! Rolling Eyes

Are ITV replacing 'Showdown' with some sort of cookery show?

Anthony Worrell Thompson was on 'Friday Night With Jonathon Ross' last week saying kids must already hate him for shunting Saturday morning kids shows from BBC1. And now he's moving to ITV and doing the same thing he's expecting them to hate him even more.

I think the cookery show was meant to be replacing CDUK, but maybe it will go in Showdown's slot as it was also announced this week there will be a new fully advertiser-funded music show for Saturday mornings.

Cant they keep Showdown on the CiTV channel?.

As far as I know, July is the end of the show on any ITV channel.

Quite sad really, I thought it was going well now - could this be the end of Saturday morning capers on ITV? Sad

On the ITV Sales page for July it says Saturday Showdown W/E week 28 .

I wonder which Quiz Channel Holly and Stephen will end up on afterwards then? Laughing

To be pedantic it actually week 26.

It is possible that they are taking a break for the summer. I'd be slightly suprised if it was being axed completely (particulary if no Childrens' programme was replacing it), as I'd have thought MediaGuardian might have picked up on it whilst writing the article.
