Thinking more about the birthday celebrations, does anybody remember what they did in 1995? Presumebly part of ITV's celebrations, they had a week of special programming, From memory it was called 'Simply the Best' that highlighted the best of ITV children's programming over 40 years. This was done in a sitcom style, and used the Goggle family (later spun into their own sitcom 'Gogglewatch'), and culminated in the CITV Awards 1995.

Anyone else remember?
This is one of my earliest memories of watching CITV as a child (as I was only 5). I do remember the sitcom style and the awards.
Also remember a very high presence of Sooty in it all. If I'm right this culminated in the special 'An Audience with Sooty' or that may have been for his anniversary a few years later?

Yep! One of the few times I watched CITV for a whole week ('fraid I was one of those CBBC viewers). CITV Awards were hosted by Neil Buchanan and some Home and Away reject IIRC, did they air on a Bank Holiday? that is how I remember it.

I think they were repeated over Christmas. It was one of the last times I ever watched Childen's ITV but I do remember Sam Brady on Teletext pointing out "Sweet Ma Goggle was also the prostitute murdered on Cracker this week". The boring Malcolm Jeffries presented it. Whatever happened to him, eh? An LWT production as well, I recall, which seemed odd in those days.
Oh, and An Audience with Sooty was indeed a year later, in November 1996.
Looking around you tube for clips, the 1995 first CITV awards were hosted by Neil Buchannan & Diane Youdale (Jet from Gladiators, & finders keepers), 1996 was Neil but with 'home & away reject' Dannii Minogue, and 1997 was Neil with guests in a pantomime setting. The full episode is on you tube...
I remember a Simply The Best music sting which was overused during CITV's 10th birthday show, the melody of which can be heard as the title card is revealed in that 1997 clip.
Probably not cheaper, but for ITV's sake its easier than producing in-house.
It is of course cheaper to commission from an independent than it is from an in house department. The broadcaster doesn't have to have people on their payroll or have facilities lying around not being used between productions.
That is why broadcasters like Carlton and Channel 5 didn't have any in house production and why the big ITV companies and the BBC have spun off production and facilities into separate companies. It's not just because it's 'easier'
With the risk though could come the reward from international sales and merchandise - Teletubbies earned the BBC 3-4 times more than The Weakest Link in the late 90s/early 2000s. Considering how focused ITV Studios are on finding formats they can sell around the world it is a wonder they don't look more to kids shows, especially as many of them simply need to be redubbed when sold around the world.

Totally agreed. ITV are so short sighted at times...they should build for the future (make programmes today that Children enjoy and they might enjoy their programming later today).
