Thanks for the contributions to this thread - might be interesting to see what the world is doing for New Year too. I suspect the situation might be reversed here with other countries making much more effort than the UK broadcasters.

AFAIK times are usually the same accross the country (shown via delay in South Australia, the Northern Territory and WA).

The Big Night In (on Ten) generated a fair bit of fuss amongst callers to Sydney's 2GB (talkback) radio station, mainly because it was targeted at a youth audience who were all out partying, leaving families waiting for the Sydney fireworks exposed to a lot of lame, crude humour. Tthere's an article from Sydney Murdoch tabloid The Daily Telegraph which gives a right-wing view:
http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,20999219-5007132,00.html

JTV (it's actually 'jtv') was quite good - from what I saw it was basically Triple J's (the radio station it comes from) NYE party, with a bunch of concerts and performances thrown in. jtv vodcasts so if you're interested you can have a look at some of their standard episodes (which show on ABC2 at 9.00).

Nine showed the Fireworks in Melbourne (from where I was at the time in regional Victoria), hosted by, amongst others, John So (Melbourne's lord mayor extraordinaire, who you might remember from the Commonwealth Games).

Seven had a countdown at midnight, and SBS, from what I can tell, continued on as usual.

Speaking of Sweden... Is it true that Swedish TV play this jolly song ( Happy New Year by ABBA) every New Year's Eve? Or is that urban-- I'm geuinely intrigued Embarassed
