I seem to remember from the days when I watched Neighbours and H&A that they take a break for Xmas in Oz, which is why we were slowly catching up with them (over many years).
Do BBC still stop Neighbours for Wimbledon to avoid this problem?

They do - and usually Christmas, but interestingly they haven't this year. However, next year with the Winter Olympics, Commonwealth Games and World Cup there will probably be more interuptions than usual.
I'm aware H&A and Neighbours stop for Christmas in Australia - but never understood why they take 6 weeks off. From discussions on Australian forums there only replaced by reruns of US comedies.
P.S. Anyone got a link to this week's listings for US television - can't seem to find one without going to individual channel websites.
The reason that both Neighbours and Home and Away take breaks is due to low ratings season, it's summer over in Australia in December and January, so most people are on holidays. However, Neighbours does run a bit longer now and only is taking 3 weeks off in Aust this year. This is most likely down the BBC. But the BBC have said they are taking less breaks next year as they have fallen behind a bit since they started taking it off at the drop of a hat. So it will be on during Christmas and most likely bank holidays next year.
With regard to the Christmas idents in Aust Network 7 and Nine have them, but Ten has a Summer one with people on the beach.
From what I've seen the US networks don't do anything special at Christmas, in that respect we're quite lucky over here. At least we get something a bit different.
ABC have Extreme Makeover : Home Edition, Desperate Housewives (repeat) & Greys Anatomy (repeat) on Christmas night.

Although Extreme Makeover H.E. is one of the most fabulous programmes I have enjoyed from the US in years.
Well, lucky me. Im staying in France at the moment and having major issues with the French keyboard. Who would think about putting the A on the top row for a start! The exclaimation mark next door to the right shift button, its blooming annoying!
Anyway here in France, presentation seems to be bare*. Film selections earlier included Ghostbusters and Chicken Run but best of all... we were treated to several hours of Five Years of Star Academy, thats Fame Academy to the likes of you and me.
Who would think that this show has knocked up five years but then its big business over here apparently, it normally takes the entire evening over for which feels like hours but just about 3 continously. There has been countless merchandise from this show but the funniest thing is most of them cant sing, at least on the likes of X Factor, they try but its not even passable here on Star Academy. Anyway thats me done for now.
EDIT: * You cant even type the word SPAR$E on here due to the last four letters being rude. Reminds me of the time when I had to promote Diçk Whittington on my local newspapers website when I was working there and I couldnt work out why certain words were being blocked!
