That's such a classic BBC problem - complaints when Tyson Fury is nominated, complaints when he isn't. As for Ronnie O'Sullivan, the first I heard anyone suggesting him as a potential winner was when he won the UK Championships last week and it just so happened SPOTY was coming up. By his standards he could be nominated most years.
That said, the first ever winner was Christopher Chataway despite the fact Roger Bannister had run the four minute mile that year, and I know it's been suggested that the reason for this is that a day or two before they opened the voting, Chataway had won a high profile race that had been on primetime TV, so he was fresh in everyone's minds and they all voted for him.
Yet when Tyson Fury *did* make the shortlist three years ago, there was outrage due to certain comments he had made - and there were even a few boos for him on the night.
Ronnie, meanwhile, is actually quite happy that he's never been nominated: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/scotland/42330358
