Last year they put Doctor Who on a fairly ridiculously early time - about 5pm - and suffered a ratings drop because of it. While this year's timeslot is later, you're right, scheduling against Corrie is televisual suicide.
6:30pm could be a good compromise though I can't imagine them wanting to schedule Midwife against the Street either...

The BBC would not be so stupid as to put the Christmas episode of Doctor Who up against Corrie. Especially as
it's the last one for Matt Smith, featuring the current Doctor regenerating into his next incarnation.
Hmmm ... it seems the BBC really are that stupid. They actually have scheduled Doctor Who against Corrie.
As much as I like Corrie, I'll be watching the final adventure of the 11th Doctor on Christmas Day evening.

Perhaps they're happy that Doctor Who fans will find the programme through iPlayer or another means (+1?) if they can't catch it on original broadcast. The BBC more than anybody else can afford to make decisions on that basis.

David Tennant's final episode was against Corrie on New Years day 2010. They're two completely different audiences. Corrie has a much older female audience. DW attracts far more men and younger people.

If only someone would create some kind of recording device.
Seriously there is very little audience crossover and there would have been more arguing for the remote last year when it was Corrie v Call the midwife.
Well I can see a lot of couples arguing over control of the remote. That's the last thing you want on Christmas Day.

I think in family situations if the kids want Doctor Who they'll get it, with parents watching Corrie on +1 or on demand. I think Doctor Who has proved it could do well against a big ITV show with the X Factor, with a historic episode and off the back of the 50th it'll do well again. Between 5pm and 10pm Doctor Who is probably the only thing that could give Corrie a run for it's money on BBC One and deliver very good ratings too.

That would probably be more people arguing with themselves rather than their partner though.

I think the former will solve the problem for most people.
