The first olympic related programme of the Christmas season! The return of 'Superstars'!

That's a very good line up of Olympic athletes.

Maybe there will be some sort of retrospective around the start of the New Year, but not whole ceremonies.

I'd say it's almost certain the Olympic opening ceremony will be shown, an edited version has been shown since

But why? It's not very Christmassy. I really doubt it, to be honest.
You really can't see the concept is pretty much identical.

Boy waits for Christmas so he can (surprise!) give his parents a present.
Snowman goes into town and comes back with a present for a snowwoman.

Yep, identical Confused

Next you'll be arguing those old Halifax song adverts with Howard were different because they had different songs.

I have to agree with Brekkie here, the advert is cringeworthy, like last year's. We all know he can seem quite contrarian, but there are a lot of people who aren't fans.

But why?

Because there's a lot of airtime to fill and the days between Christmas and New Year always has programmes looking back at the previous year.

Since when has programming over the Christmas period had to be Christmassy?

No, because they have the same character.

The only connection between this years John Lewis Christmas ad and last years is the style - a silent film with a covered song over it. But that is just the style of the series of adverts - every John Lewis ad from about the last 4 years has been like it but they've all been totally different stories/characters/shooting styles/songs

This is actually my favourite John Lewis Christmas advert.

Yes, but I don't think playing out the whole opening ceremony is the same. As much as it's cheap, I doubt there will be much of an audience for it. As mentioned before, the DVDs and Blu-rays cover it.
EDIT: Having just seen that there will be a Superstars 90 minute special, featuring 16 British medal-winners from the Olympics, I feel that my point is vindicated. Such a programme (being a special) is more in tune with they way Christmas programming is done.

Since 1987? What a stupid question.

Christmas programmes are Christmassy to a very large degree. New Year's programmes have retrospectives, not full replays of entire events.

Yes, and the style quickly becomes very samey. The style is the biggest part of the advert. I don't see why you attacked Brekkie simply because he hates the style, and the story had changed so little it still seemed crap.

Yes, but then again it was a stupid point to make in the first place wasn't it?

A lot are but it's also a time when the channels fill their schedules with random non-Christmas related repeats - BBC2 for example strips whole series across late night and mid mornings.

There's not normally an event that warrants or can have a replay, did the Royal Wedding get one last year? I would have thought that if the rights allow we'll see a repeat of the Jubilee concert too.

The Olympic Opening ticks all the boxes for a Christmas repeat - it fills 2/3 hours, is pre-watershed friendly, people liked it first time round, it's cheap, it's the last time they'll be able to show it etc.

See you back here when the Radio Times is out I suppose!

I didn't 'attack' anyone. I just disagreed with the assertion that it's 'basically the same'... which it isn't

Yes - our argument will be settled on November 27th. But I think there are better fillers.

It is basically the same, as the style of the advert is the most basic structural part of the advert. You were simply picking a specific point (the plot), and making that out as the whole advert.

I'm glad you agree, it was yours in the first place! Cool

I'm sure there are but that's irrelevant. I'm sure there's better programmes to show than Only Fools and Horses but that doesn't mean it will be left off the schedule!

My point was that Christmas programming was generally Christmassy. You tried to disagree, then ended up agreeing.

There aren't better programmes to show than Only Fools and Horses. I can't believe you could say such a thing.

Liking Boots have mini ads that tie in with their main 1 minute one.
