Good to see (according to the BBC Press Office website) TOTP Christmas Special is indeed going to be on this year - which is not what the Christmas TV magazine said in the Daily Mirror the other day.

Good news about New Year's Day...BBC1 have realised perhaps normal daytime programmes were a mistake last year and will return to the tried and tested formula of CBBC and a film for the morning of the first.
But I predict bad news once again for those wanting to see Christmas idents on New Year's Day, though the BBC1 junctions may still be worth a look

That's good news, last year's New Year's Day schedule on BBC1 was dreadfull, it looked like an everyday schedule to me last year.
I hope the confirmed BBC2 xmas schedules look better than they do in the early xmas tv guides. Repeats of Flog It! every afternoon and Animal Park over xmas is awfull scheduling.

Thats good news for New Years Day. The only things that should be on within daytime over Christmas in my opinion are films, children's programmes, and repeats of comedies, and of the prime time events that they can replay. A bit like sunday afternoon/early evening is at the moment I suppose.
And is that a slight hint that you know something about the idents Simon? And that they may be doing something different to the norm on New Years Day? I'm not sure that they should if they are. Some say that they'd like a new year ident, I'm not sure really. Though if they use outdoor skaters, maybe addapting to include fireworks in the sky? Or am I way off?

I totally agree there. Christmas schedules used to be full of films, classic comedies old and new and festive dramas. Seeing programmes such as or prorgrammes like To Buy or Not to Buy or Cash in the Attic over the Christmas period just wasn't heard of.
This xmas it appears the BBC are showing quite a film feast on BBC1 almost everyday with nearly 6 straight hours of films from 10am most mornings according to the early xmas guides in last week's Mirror guide. It's good to see the BBC finally treating us viewers to a more suitable schedule. A pity BBC2 doesn't look the same though.

The clue is in the first sentence...anything else I'll leave you to guess!

Yup, bit of a shame for those who would have liked to see Christmas pres extend to 1st Jan or beyond, as that seems to be unlikely - but at least there's a consolation of sorts.
By having something else to look out for, it would make up for the early (IMO premature) withdrawl of the festive look - this could be leaving the possibility again of a new ident with each passing new year - we'll have to wait and see, though.

But why can't they keep the Christmas idents for New Years Day and then air a new ident from the second?

Perhaps Marketing picked upon the feeling that perhaps the Christmas idents were airing for too long. Unfortunately they chose to tackle it from the wrong end (ie. get rid of them as soon as possible after Christmas instead of delaying launch until the day before Christmas).
It was certainly a shock to those who saw the 2004 Christmas ident running up to and including the small hours of Tuesday 5 January 2005, and the next year's running until end of play on the bank holiday after New Year's Day 2006, to suddenly find things "back to normal" on New Year's Day. However, worth remembering that BBC2 stayed in Christmas mode on New Year's Day (making it the first time both channels ended their Christmas looks seperately), will they do so again?

You'd hope not. You'd hope that they'd begin and end on the same date.
For this year, surely Saturday 22nd is suitable, it's earlier than Christmas Eve, but not over a week early.

The UKTV Channels changed to their Christmas presentation yesterday (rather too early for my liking). It's standard across all the channels (except for the colour, which is the usual one for the channel obviously) for breakbumpers.
The main idents have also been amended to incorporate "festive scenes", but not sure whether these are standard across the whole network. They incorporate graphics used in the BBs. Following examples from UKTV History.
