What the f**k has happened to "The Royle Family"? Now we know why Ralf Little didn't want to take part. Amateurish and tiresome script/plot...and why have the characters gone from being believable and loveable to bizzarely dumbed-down, un-believeable and annoying. Very sad addition to "The Royle Family" story...s**ts on the shows great past!

I have it on Sky+. Shame to hear it's that bad..perhaps Caroline is just trying to milk it for what it's worth now.

Maybe to give Craig Cash's Jellylegs Productions company some work.

The Royal Family was terrible. It had a really weird OTT feel to it and lacked that poignant realism it's known for. Dave's dad was nothing like the character they'd refereed to all these years....and why had everyone seemingly forgotten Christmas Day is also "Baby Davids" birthday?

Is there any reason that HTV West and Westcountry has Help! I'm A Fish as the Christmas night film rather than Mermaids as being shown everywhere else?

I noticed that, different CA too. Not seen a regional opt out on Christmas Day for years and strange it was just those two regions.

As I understand it, the BBC and ITN take it in turns to produce the speech every other year.

It's every 2 years

I thought it was great, highlight of my Christmas viewing. I liked it that they took it away from the normal setting and style. There were some great jokes in there too

For some strange reason BBC1 has been running around 7 mins later than billed all night, not sure why as there isn't anything live in the schedule

It was odd, I assume that Eastenders part 1 came in too long and shoved the rest up.

Although it looks like it was planned for as Blackadder started 7 mins late but finished 1 min late

IIRC they use the tactic every Christmas - season of goodwill and all that.

Completely agree - exactly the same mistake as the made with Only Fools and Horses. The original ending was far superior and this was just a disappointment - but as over 9m were force fed it on Christmas Day I'm sure it'll be back again.

And talking of Only Fools and Horses, this must be the first time in years that it's not on BBC1 over Christmas at all.

Highlight of Christmas though has to be Gavin and Stacey, which produced one of it's best episodes so far and deserved it's slot on BBC1.

Having now seen it, I have mixed reactions.. To be honest, it now seems the whole show would die on it's arse (excuse the pun) if it wasn't for Ricky Tomlinson as Jim Royle.

But yes most things were OTT, such as:

- Jim just putting on a tie over his usual shirt, yes it got a slight laugh in our house but he's usually a big player in family events and would surely make more of an effort.

- David Senior - played by a well-established actor but the "Barb-erra" gag was silly.

- Cut-to shots of Dave in the kitchen with the electrical tools trying to chop up the turkey. The bathroom/sunbed scene was far enough.

- As mentioned, forgetting Baby David's birthday and the fact nobody even contacted Anthony on Christmas Day.

It was brave of the scenery to change but it could have been done much better. If they do anymore it could be in danger of turning into Early Doors - which (also written by Craig Cash/Phil Mealey) was also funny but started to react more on written work as opposed to observation.

Still, the Rhubarb wine part was funny at the end.

I think it suffered on two counts really.

Firstly, the trailer contained the shows only gag about it not being a day for kids, and secondly, Gavin and Stacey really raised expectations and made The Royle Family look really outdated.

Well thats a matter of opinion though.

Personally I've never seen Gavin & Stacey so can't comment there.

Me neither, I was going to watch the xmas special, but as I haven't seen any of the other episodes yet I didn't think it would make much sense to me.

The thing I really liked about The Royle Family was that it was different to previous episodes. Last years' xmas special comeback was a bit of a bore fest. The visual gags around making the dinner were great, and didn't seem too tired despite every programme from Bottom to Mr Bean doing similar things in the past
