Anyone who wants to watch Harry Potter though would have had it on video or DVD already lol.

I bet you ITV will fight for Lord of the Rings though

That would get the ratings battle going, but it depends on a few things. How BBC/ITV advertise it, if one advertises with a big christmas family film, and the other just plonks it in the tv guide without any acknowledgment then the big advertiser will get the ratings, also it depends on which has a bigger following.

I'm sure Channel 4 will show Lord of the O-Rings and Harry Porker, which will get more viewers Wink

I used to like Christmas Eve TV with Mrs Merton's Christmas Show until the National Lottery Christmas Millionaire Maker took over. Rolling Eyes Oh and there was that Winton's Wonderland show that Dale Winton did....the only thing Christmas about that was the studio!

I can't believe they STILL repeat Morecambe and Wise! Why not stick The Two Ronnies on

If ITV show LORD OF THE RINGS then how totally ruined it will be! It is far too a complexed and fantastical movie to be interrupted by ads every 20 minutes and I think alot of viewers will think the same. Hopefully the BBC will show it and yes, they are (apparently) showing Harry Potter 1 this Christmas along with Bend it Like Beckham, Reign of Fire and Pirates of the Carribean. But my best memory of a Christmas Day film was back in 1978 when the whole family were ordered by my mum to watch the British Television Premiere of "The Sound of Music". It was what my mum and dad watched on their honeymoon back in 1966 so my mum was quite excited about seeing it again! Bless her.

I think the most memorable TV christmas for me would be 1996 and the last episodes of Only Fools and Horses. The best (and sadest) TV christmas ever. Got over 20 million viewers those episodes if I recall too!

Well until they went and ruined it back in 2001! Rolling Eyes

Christmas Day 1996 on BBC1 was fab all the way through! There was a brand new Aunties Bloomers, Jurassic Park Premiere, Only Fools and Horses where "Batman and Robin" ran through the streets of Peckham and the brilliant Vicar of Dibley episode involving several Christmas dinners. That is one of my best Christmas memories. I like the song Ding Dong Merrily On High in Dibley where the bit about "Gloria" just goes on and on in lowere and lower keys! They certainly don't make Christmas night schedules as strong as that now! And that was just 8 years ago. how things have changed.

Yes, there were a lot of great sitcom Christmas specials from 1996, and from other years in the mid-90s. There was Father Ted, The Fast Show, The Vicar of Dibley, Only Fools and Horses, Keeping Up Appearances, Men Behaving Badly and Shooting Stars, all of which I remember with great fondness. Pity we won't get that for a while now, seeing as we don't have any decent sitcoms to start with, let alone any Christmas specials!

Hopefully this years Christmas Day schedules on the BBC will be worth while. Theres plenty of good programmes that could have christmas specials made. My Family (another funny one), Top of the Pops (with all the interactive Karaoke elements), Eastenders (maybe if Christmas was happier in Albert Square then they would win back some viewers, but when has Christmas in Albert Square been happy). Even the Eastenders Christmas special last year when they had all the pop acts and cast members singing was good, perhaps more should be done. Would love to see Noels Christmas Presents return, certainly brings a tear to your eye and makes you think about those who are not as fortunate at christmas. Not to mention all the family films that are shown on Xmas Day whether repeats or not. Maybe less of the tacky programmes at christmas would be a good thing such as the quiz show specials, especially the ones from the previous years. But there are some TV christmas traditions that should never die. James Bond film on ITV, Queens Speech, Morning Service from a huge cathedral, Morecambe and Wise Christmas Special, Childrens cartoons starting at about 4am for those that are wondering if "HE" has been.

One fond memory I'm sure all of us on this forum will recall is the unveiling of that years Christmas Channel Symbol (as they were called then). I used to enjoy ITV when the regional announcer would appear on screen sat next to a cosy fire with Christmas Tree in the background to tell us what was on next.

The BBC's Christmas Symbols were as magical as Christmas itself, but in this over commercialised world the magic of Christmas has virtually vanished, and for me, even the insistence of TV companies showing idents from about 21 December until New Years Day spoils the impact!

It was great waking up early on Christmas Eve and popping the TV on and catching the unveiling of BBC1's Christmas ident with the announcer greeting us with
"Good Morning and Welcome to BBC1 on Friday December 24th, Christmas Eve. Our programmes get under way shortly with CBBC but first a look ahead to some goodies coming up later today."
Then at Closedown on Boxing Day, the symbol would disappear forever! Our lives would return to normal and we'd all look forward to getting p.i.s.s.e.d on New Year's Eve!

Those happy days!

This is my idea for Christmas Day on BBC1 this year:
6.00am Cbeebies
8.00 Dick and Dom at Christmas
10.00 Christmas Morning Worship
11.00 The Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show
12.05 FILM: E.T- The Extra Terrestrial
1.55 BBC News, weather
2.00 Top Of The Pops
3.00 The Queen
3.10 Dear Father Christmas
3.55 FILM PREMIERE: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
6.20 BBC News
6.30 EastEnders
7.00 Dr Who (Launch of Brand New Series)
7.45 My Family
8.20 The Two Ronnies All-New Christmas Show
9.05 EastEnders
9.45 BBC News
9.55 FILM PREMIERE: Bend It Like Beckham
11.40 Christmas Reflection
11.45 FILM: Gremlins
1.30 News 24

Obviously the films are speculative as is the entire schedule. However, the BBC have announced that after 1st September you can apply for tickets to see five Two Ronnies shows being recorded so I am assuming that there will be four shows in an experimental series and will be launched with a Christmas special.

What do you reckon?

Hang on, won't it be Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, rather than the Philosopher's Stone that will get a premiere?

No that's right, the first film Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone will get it's terrestrial television premiere.

What will happen when everyone goes digital, will they not have terrestrail premieres, and just leave them to sky.

Anyway. My Christmas moments are all things that make me Christmassy, like the GMTV Christmas Jingle with the really high pitched part at the end of it, Wizard being on every TV show in the week before, Children's presenters getting all excited, and the Christmas idents and pres, especially if they have a christmassy tune with them.
