I think that the idents normally make quite a late appearance on ITV. I recall last year (though I could be thinking of another year), that it made its first appearance on Christmas Eve, mid-to-late morning-ish (I feel a bit sad for remebering, but it had just stuck in my mind). I loved the Christmassy music for the last few years.

Yep, ITV have stuck with the tradition of saving them till Christmas Eve (or at most, a couple of days before).
I think the break bumper is there just to brighten things up in the mean time - not sure it's been rushed out though, as it's basically the same animation as used on the logo in the trailers.

ITV's Christmas idents launched 24th between 2002-2004. In 2005 it launched the 22nd, running through until end of play New Year's Eve.
I am not sure why any of us think there is a Christmas ident - would it not have launched with the bumper?

Why would the bother making a breakbumper if they aren't making idents though? They could have easily made such a breakbumper last year, but chose not to in the same way they chose not to make the idents.

ITV1 don't seem to make special idents for anything any more. They prefer to promote things via break bumpers (Kylie, I'm a Celebrity) which makes little sense as an ident would be noticed more.

Would it really? Surely there are more people who miss the very beginning of shows. Break bumpers are probably shown 3 or 4 times more often.

Very often though, people don't know what the bumpers are for. I recently had to explain to someone the significance of those used for I'm A Celebrity.

One retarded friend of yours does not equal "very often", though. I'm sure that most people knew what they were referring to.

The person I spoke of is certainly not a "****", just someone who isn't familiar with the mechanics of TV pres or the show being promoted.

Well, no.
A lot of telly people assume the general public hang on every single word they say, every single programme they screen, and therefore the millions spent on branding is always noticed and you know about every single reference to a new programme.
The reality being most only watch in a casual manner and the ITV audience is generally of lower intelligence anyway
.
Think the classic example was my parents a week or two ago watching ITV News and thinking it was Newsnight because the cable box had a fit and was showing '102'. If people don't notice stuff like that, how the hell are they going to know what some random stuffed animals are meant to be advertising?
