What is there to celebrate after New Years Eve? I have always taken my decorations down on New Years Day. It is symbolic for having a fresh start and a nice new beginning. Taking the decorations down reinforces this. Anyway, I've been back at work since Monday so I can't be arsed to celebrate anymore. ITV decided to get back to normal. Fair play to them. Those snowflake idents on BBC1 are getting on my nerves now. They should have gone on Boxing Day, it is irritating seeing them all the time. Normality is a good thing, we know where we are with normality. Anyway, in 40 or so weeks we can discuss this topic again. Happy New Year!
Well it still seems to be Christmas here in the South West... at 6pm the Christmas South West ident was used into the News.... Either network hasn't told Plymouth or Plymouth are doing what they feel and keeping them till the 6th... It seemed very strange seeing the normal BBC1 idents earlier... seems like I haven't seen them in ages! (Well it has been 2 weeks!)
18:30 Edit: Ah well... someone must've said something! They've just used Tai Chi into the main regional bulletin.

Yeah as BBC1 will reuse the same idents again next Christmas!
Apparantly not! I have had some info that says that four Xmas idents are going to be made and they will be used in alternate years. So we get to see different idents every year but on a cycle of four. Whether the info is true or not we'll have to wait and see. But The Snowflake Kids WILL be used again in 2006!

I'm always dubious about this kind of information, can you give some indication as to your source ?
I can not obviously reveal the identity of my source but I can say that they are able to get access to presentation and TV news. With reference to the dancer idents, there is no indication that the idents are to be based on the dancers but variations of the dancers are scheduled for the forseeable future, at least until November 2005. Even if they were to be axed , it would take 12-18 months to come up with something different. So we are stuck with the dancers for some time to come yet. I personally think it makes sense to devise three more Christmas idents and use them alternately. Somehow I think you'd Know where you are and feel familiar with them without getting bored as you'd know there'd be something different next year. If this information IS NOT Proved to be correct, I will reveal my source!! That's how confident I am. The BBC have said that "No decision has been taken with reference to Christmas 2004 and the programmes and presentation package pending".

I'm not sure I like the idea of having 4 idents used alternative years. I think I'd prefer something like the BBC and have different idents used together, like they do with normal BBC ONE, perhaps adding one a year, so next year we have a news one along the snowflake kids, then the next year another new one. Or have something that's not really based on the current theme, but with some reference to it. Like 2001's christmas idents where the balloon was just seen through the window. Perhaps have a dancing toy or something.

This sounds very unlikely. What if BBC ONE has a different Controller by then? It's quite possible he or she would change all of the idents.
Even if a new controller does take over BBC1, any money spent on current idents by the current controller will be honoured for a fixed period of time. Most idents (not just at the BBC but on most channels) have a life span of about five years because they cost far too much to produce. Infact apart from ITV's "Heart" logo from 1998 until 2001, the BBC Balloon was on screen for less time than any other network symbol( not including those dreadful "link" channel four logo's from 96!) The balloon lasted for four years and four months, so you can tell by this info that the dancers would be around for at least another year or so. Lorraine Heggessey expressed her dislike for the balloon in January 2001 and decided to axe it. It took 14 months for something new to appear. Christmas idents may actually be produced to link in with any change. They could be made to adapt to change so whatever the image, the viewer would not really notice. Unless of course they are intelligent, observant people like us!

I'm not convinced this would necessarily be the case; if a new Controller wanted the dancers to go, they'd go. The current idents don't cost that much to make, and certainly not enough to stop them being withdrawn if that's what the person running the channel wanted. And even if the dancers are still on BBC ONE in a year or two, I don't think anyone could honestly claim to already know what the 2006 Christmas idents are going to be.
My comment about the snowflake kids reappearing in 2006 was sarcasm! They may not even be among the idents used at Christmas in the future. However, programmes are already being agreed and financed for Christmas 2004 which were probably decided last year, so there's a chance that Christmas 2005 may even be pencilled in especially as some films purchased may not be able to be shown until then.
Anyway, this is the final time I am going to comment on Christmas Idents until November. If I do hear anything from the BBC regarding this years ident I will let you all know. CHRISTMAS IS OVER!!!!
