You've guessed it - a live action remake known as "Ice dance". Fits in brilliantly with current policy - rhythm and movement, Victorian skaters in red - a graphic designer's dream. The film could start with the skaters chucking snowballs playfully at each other, before taking their positions and whizzing round the snowman. They could also pair up and waltz.

Hmm...you know, this is actually a good idea.

I think it was Mike Stand who came up with that little gem.

Although it's not materialised as yet, I'd put it in the "more likely to be true than a wind-up" category.

Of course it would be nice to see the faces behind the voice, but this form of IVC would be lost on the audience. Many of us can't recognise particular celebs on the idents.

BBC1 would look good with ice skaters.

BBC2 could have the 2 celebrating Hannukah...something for the non-Christians among us. Or, better yet, how about white, black, brown, yellow and red 2s all getting together and doing something that symbolises peace and brotherhood?

BBC3 could just go off the air and leave us in peace.

BBC4 could have a rotating globe style Christmas ident a la BBC1 in the 1970s.

ITV could have it's celebs dressed up as Santa, Elves and even the Grinch (if copyright allows). Or they could do clever things with mistletoe.

4 could make classy idents where usual variations on the animated logos are presented to the tune of jazzy Christmas music (think the sort of stuff that Henry Mancini used to make for the Peanuts cartoon Christmas special in the 1960s on American tv).

five, as has already been said, will probably do things with "incidental scenes" around Christmas...like a half-eaten Turkey on a table with people's hands in the way moving dishes of food around...and other boring voyeuristic garbage.

Anyone any guesses on what day the christmas idents on the BBC and ITV will be introduced this year?

What day did they start last year?

I'd have thought Monday 22nd December would be a good date to start with the Christmas idents.

The BBC started the weekend before Christmas.

I thought that the majority of terrestrial started the saturday before, the 21st december. BBC One started in the evening, BBC Two in the afternoon. five & channel 4had their's runing throughout the day.

I can't remember when itv1 added the sparkle, but it was rubbish and cheap anyway.

I am hoping that BBC One either have a new ident, set of idents or add a new festive one. It wouldn't be right for BBC One though to bring back past christmas idents.

I would really like itv1 to at least try something. I wouldn't mind if it was celebrities in santa hats playing in snow with bells on the music, but something would be great. And after seeing the september new idents I am hoping for something. Something along the lines of ministry of design's mock would be fantastic, but i doubt itv have the talent for anything like this!

Well frankly, anything'll be better last year's efforts. ITV really have no excuse, their new look's bedded in now.

Won't they first been seen toping and tailing the Christmas season promos from sometime this week?

The first sightings of them appear on the BBC on the day of the official press launch - which is usually in the first full week of December.

Last year they weren't. Last years BBC One Christmas promo included the the santa writing his letter, the snowdome and the bulbs on the street. Yet the idents were kids in snow flake outfits in the snow.

And itv1's promos featured the reindeer, yet the idents were the normal ones with the stars flying over them.

I still dont get why they did this, as previous years GMG regions have had the promo designs as idents, like the eskimo girl. They could have easily been adapted.

And I hope if itv1 do do anything this year (fingers crossed), then I hope they have a festive version of the theme (like BBC ONE), rather than this years idea (so far) of adding jingle bells on to the top of theme tunes.

They should do, as listings are confirmed then, aren't they (?). The BBC usually trail their Christmas's a couple of weeks before they launch their idents.
