The bigger question should be will it get another full series?

I doubt it, due to the MBB cast tour schedules which I'd argue are more lucrative for Brendan O'Carroll than the BBC tv show. I'd also expect a movie sequel before 2020 as well.

What's the evidence of him only wanting to do one or the other? Surely keeping as many channels as open as possible is the ideal situation to be in.

There's a UK and Ireland tour this year, the Australian tour in 2016 and he wants to get a MBB spin-off commissioned featuring Rory and Dino at the salon where they work. This could be a film or a BBC/RTE commission.

Having the MBB tv show only on twice a year would allow for those projects without time consuming writing sessions of 6 per series. Considering MBB over Christmas in my personal opinion were the weakest yet of the BBC series, despite the consolidated ratings because they were stretched doing the movie and the 2014 live show, this is a good thing.

I read it as being that what he is writing at the moment (unrelated to the spin-off) could either be another series of the show or another film.
