Some presenters apparently like to work Christmas Day if they have no immediate family as they get to be with friends and colleagues rather than alone in a flat somewhere.

This is of course not really what the topic is about so I'll be quiet.

Money, that's what that's all about, triple time etc. Can any of us who are employed by a company who needs someone in on Christmas Day say any different?

ha ha ha

If you work for the BBC you get an extra £90, before tax, if you work on Christmas or Boxing day. Nothing for any other day of the year.

Not a big incentive

Don't forget you can chat about the RTVCC (Which is about regional bulletins on Christmas day) using the link on my sig.

Yep, Christmas Day last year was with George Alagiah, Breakfast by Darren Jordon. There was no North West Today on Christmas Day, but I remeber Nigel Jay and Martin Henfield shared the bulletins over Christmas. This year I reckon it will by Nigel Jay (equivalent of Peter Levy), Martin Henfield, and possible the new addition of Tina Bangs for a few Breakfasts.

Sky are different, though, they're international and whilst I think the top story last year was something about father christmas they still broadcast to a lot of countries - there's heavy Sky viewing in the middle east - which do not celebrate christmas.

That's something I find a bit silly; do you think a Middle-East news channel would tone down Islamic celebrations to appease westerners?

Slightly unlikely...

But that's different. Traditionally Middle East news channels do not have high take-up in non-Islamic countries, so there's no real need for them to tone down celebrations.

As far as I am aware, Sky is the only primarily domestic news channel that serves a major international audience. It didn't stop them last year and it never has before, it's just a different situation for Sky because whilst they are a heavily domestic network they oddly have a large amount of overseas viewers.

As far as I can remember, last year BBC News 24 went with Big Ben and then covered various celebrations round the UK for about 15 minutes before returning to the news.

I'd have thought that they'd not show the weather when it's coming up to 12 and go to Big Ben. And for BBC World, they don't say Happy Xmas do they (I don't know - I'm just guessing after what I've read) so I doubt they'd say Happy New Year.

I recorded last years BBC News 24 in the run to 12. It was Clarence Mitchel and Gwenan Edwards who were on at the time. If i remember correctly they had the weather slightly early then they went back to Clarence where at 11.58 they went to various pitcure of around London then back to Big Ben, after that a few mnore pictures of fireworks etc going on then they went to vairous pictures and continued as normal, I think after 1230 it was only Clarence who continued through the night till 6am where it was Daren Hordan with Breakfast.

Clarence must have taken over from Chris Lowe at some point, as I remember watching Chris and Gwenan before going to a party at my Auntie's

Was Chris Lowe on News 24 at new years eve? I thought it was only Gwenan. Clarence joined Gwenan at 11.00pm. It was really good!
