I imagine it's been in the planning for a long time and they're probably a bit gutted a similar idea was used as JL's big rebrand push. But it's hardly a concept that any one company can claim ownership over, more an unfortunate coincidence, as when two films with similar plots are released around the same time.
Lovely advert. The brand slogan at the end seems out of kilter with everything else but a nice production nevertheless.
Haven't John Lewis already done this?

Does that work on a recording too? Very clever and seamless if so.
Sky adsmart?
‘Sky AdSmart uses an algorithm that helps to make sure that ads play out when a chosen audience is most likely to be watching. It takes into account the projected linear audience which helps to enhance targeting within the household.’

I think it does (or can) It is a very slick facility. It could actually be used to insert opt out programming into
a channel. What a shame the BBC regional news is live, but some of ITV's isn't.....

So presumably I could be watching something I recorded months ago and a current Christmas ad could pop up?

Just seen an advert for Intu Merry Hill on a recording from Sky Arts earlier. "Merry Hill" mentioned in vision only, is this going out nationally or is it possible to add regional elements in vision on Sky channels?
Scotland its has Braehead, as said in vision only,

Apparently it’s this Thursday.

I know Christmas is still 6 weeks away, but with a lot of the main big brands/stores having already released their seasonal ad campaigns this year, I'm surprised that John Lewis haven't "joined the party" yet.

I just spotted the same Intu Merry Hill ad on another recording, this time from Sky One, but rewound my recording after the ad had finished and it rewound into an Air China instead.
I think the ad is inserted at the time of recording.

AdSmart is inserted at normal playback speed only from adverts cached on the box, if you roll back you'll see what was actually transmitted as opposed to what the box inserted. Likewise if you fast forward through it you won't see it.
Much like everything else on Sky, presumably new adverts are squirted to the box on a regular basis and they can feature on older recordings too if the channel you recorded from is adsmart enabled (which will be most of the Sky channels and a few others). Unsure if the advert updates use the broadband or like the software updates comes down from the dish, most likely the latter as its the only connection that can be guaranteed.
