If the BBC One idents are to be changed in January, what they are to be replaced with must be the best kept secret in the media. I would have expected something to leak out by now.

It's not January that BBC One are getting new idents. It'll be later in the year.

Oh ok, don't know why I thought that. I thought it was going to be sooner rather than later, same with ITV1.

What do you think this is,1995?http://web.ukonline.co.uk/tv.home/forum/emoticons/biggrin.gif In those days it was clock, then full no V/O ident, every night. People still think this happens today but NO,it doesn't.
This happens very, very, very, very, very, very, very rarely today. It's usually just 'Well that's all from BBC Two for now,at 7.00 it's Match of the Day, with Bolton versus Manchester, join us then. Until then, have a peaceful night'
Notice the absense of the words 'Closing Down' and 'Goodnight'. Those words are used very rarely (However I did hear a 'Goodnight' about 2 weeks ago)

Ah, so that might mean the arrival of the new BBC LEARNING ident which has been seen on BBC PRIME for sometime now.

Since I haven't seen it mentioned, I hereby alert anyone who hasn't already noticed to the fact that the Learning Zone is now on its christmas break and some extended closedown idents might well be popping up over the next few weeks.
Going through the schedules, I rate the following as strong possibilities for a 90-second countdown into News 24 on BBC ONE:
Sat 29 Dec - official handover time 3.00 am
Wed 1 Jan - official handover time 2.55am
Fri 4 Jan - official handover time 2.00am
Sat 5 Jan - official handover time 2.55am.
And who knows, old people *do* often die during cold spells - I know it's horrible, but if the Queen Mother does sucumb over christmas we might see some interesting stuff, especially on BBC TWO (BBC TWO yellow clock? BBC generic clock?)...

Like I keep saying, it would have been good if BBC TWO relaunched later than Novemebr so maybe at Christmas we would have seen longer versions of Neon, Optic etc? I might tape one or two closedowns this Christmas, I know they won't be brilliant, I'll just keep them for the record. Why didn't I do this back in 1995? Anyone got a time machine?

Just to answer the other question - the generic clock was not used on Diana's death - it was preceded by a /B/B/C/ ident until at least BBC1 and 2 went their separate ways.
There is a generic/'family' ident - AFAIK, its the same as the ones seen on BBC Video (with the wavey things in the background) but the clock has never been seen.....

Do the BBC still have a generic ident/clock and does anyone have any clips or descriptions of it if they've seen it?

Yes indeed... basically, I'd rate the new idents as 'B' grade - which is good, except that they've scrapped 'A' grade idents in favour of these yellow ones. Frankly, I'd just like to get the full-length versions and then get rid of them!
Of the new ones, I especially hate Domino (that cut to the close-up is horrible!). I feel the others might have worked as additions to the old range, but not as replacements.
Part of the problem is that the whole lot have adopted a similar computer-animated style to Woodpecker - IMHO the worst of the 'Last Batch', a nice idea badly rendered.
On the other hand, most of the non-pres-fanatic peasants I've asked about this seem to like the new ones. Public opinion - pah!

The problem is that I don't mind the idents too much if I don't think about what they replaced. I think they'd probably be good for the Comedy Zone or BBC Three but then I think back to 10 years worth of imaginative, varied (both in style/colour and design - computer, live action etc..), appropriate to the programmes, and themed idents and realise they are poor in comparison. The old ones had personality - and didn't had to resort to the 2 spouting arms and waving a domino 2 up or flipping a logo over!
