Toys R Us seem to suffer from 'Coca Cola trucks syndrome' - they've been trying new ad campaigns for over a decade, but no matter what they do all everyone wants is that original 80s/90s jingle. Similarly Coca Cola spend thousands of pounds every year on glossy high-budget ads, but they still have to run the 1990s trucks ad for a few weeks to keep everyone happy.

yes - although I appreciate the effort I think it's a shame they have to hack off the ending (although I appreciate "always Coca Cola" is 'off message' now).

I think Toys R Us have been known to screen the full version of the ad alongside the hacked to pieces version.

When you think about it, there's nothing actually Christmassy about the advert, apart from the fact it's only ever shown at Christmas.

Turns out this was part of a campaign whereby the public were invited to pic which music to use in their Christmas campaign. Unsurprisingly over 90% picked the original.

Oh so they've brought back the old Toys R Us tune? Last year they introduced new CGI characters and a completely new song. I wouldn't have thought they would listen to complaints from those who grew up with the old tune, I presumed when they decided to make a new one that they thought this could have been the Toys R Us advert song for the next generation. Obviously not, I guess.

My son hated that song so.....

That's the main problem - as far as I can tell the trucks were basically a Christmas version of the Always Coca-Cola advert that ran in the US at least. Not sure if it was ran here.

It sure was used here. Not sure of what extent, but they appeared to have used the same adverts. This is the one that preceded the trucks (video was recorded in 1994, though I imagine it was used in 1995.)

The way ghosts of the Always Coca Cola campaign live on remind me of how elements of the 1989 ITV jingle were still being incorporated into the weather jingles, long after the Get Ready campaign was dead and buried.

YouTub user anicetune has incorporated the famous Toys R Us ad with what the company clearly wants to advertise and it works well.

I think I can remember similar ads to these?

Is now a good time to mention that as a 7 year old I thought Miller Time was an actual TV show and never understood why I couldn't find it in the tv guide.

Also Smithy from The Bill in that Persil advert IIRC

The lyrics are kind of old fashioned now.

Quote:
From ceiling to floor; books, board games & bikes, teddies, puppets & dolls, bats, spaceships & trikes!

None of the above seem to be what Toys R Us are pushing nowadays. The lyrics would need to be rewritten to cover things that appeal to the kids of today. Things like Pogs, Pingu, Yo-yos, Pokemon and Blackberry Messenger if I know kids. Also, stacking things from ceiling to floor is a massive fire risk.

I wonder if the 'hacked up' versions of the ad have always existed alongside the full version since day one. The reason being, in the hacked version posted above, the animation where the shop worker throws stars up in the air to act as a transition to the products, doesn't exist in the full version so it must've been animated specially.

Obviously they've then gone and made new Christmas adverts when that slogan/campaign was retired but people keep asking for the trucks and so they just hacked the new jingle/slogan onto the end of the old advert. I feel like it could be done a bit better but obviously they won't want to improve an old ad campaign when they are trying to push this year's.

Hi. It did run here and even had a Christmas variation.
