They may run the 2011 Christmas alongside the retro ident, I hope so anyway as the idents are on a while.
I hope they're going flat out retro then and not just 1 or 2 from that era which, while fine within the wider context of the yellow campaign, are hardly design classics in their isolated selves. Very interested to see how they handle the surrounding presentation.
Sad to see the demise of the 2011 ident, the only recent example of well-rounded BBC2 presentation.

I grew up with that as a "Christmas advert". I don't know if it's the line "there's a magical place" with the twinkly sound that makes it feel festive, or maybe it's a generation of kids who used to watch them before fetching their Christmas list.
I grew up mishearing the opening line as if they were describing something but got interrupted as they'd already arrived:
"There's a magical place, we're...oh no, we're there...!"
The weirdest thing about the whole thing is how it's so associated with the start of the festive season, yet it's not even a Christmas ad! When it launched it was used all year around.

Possibly didn't start them yesterday due to the #pipknit stuff taking over most of the pres. I'm sure they started on the 1st last tear.
I'm guessing they've only started today because the BBC started yesterday, as 2nd Dec would be an odd day to plan it.

Leading into the second line, "With toys in their millions, all- blimey, an anthropomorphic giraffe."
But it didn't scan well.

I agree. Yes they fit in with their usual style but a little something different for Christmas is always welcome.
I notice that there doesn't seem to be anything again for ITV2. Have the other ITV Channels switched to festive presentation?
Yep, I was seriously hoping we'd see a bit of something new this year, especially with all the Christmas Jumper stuff, but nope!
Such a shame, considering what we had in 2012, 2010 and 2008/09! (Not including 2011 as that wasn't all that good).

The characters are pointless and do nothing for the channel. I think Challenge's look is the worst one it's ever had. They only ever seem to play the same one or two break bumpers and it's usually the Family Fortunes buzzer noise, so I'm glad to not be hearing it!
Challenge have put their decorations up but the ad break stings with the Characters are soundless. The original sound effects such as the Family Fortunes UHH-UHH sound would work perfectly well.
