All the news presenters I have seen leave the set as soon as the countdown reaches zero and the director says 'off the air'. For example, the Six O'Clock presenter is out of the studio well before UK Today comes on air 30 seconds later... they also only arrive in the studio about 3 minutes before going to air...

Speaking of UK Today...
Previously, somewhere in this forum, someone suggested that whoever presents 'the 6' should toddle over to the UK Today desk and do that too (because current UK Today presenters are 'nobodies', plus it beats sitting around like forgotten luggage for 25mins just to do the 18:55 update)
I think it's a great idea, but what (I hear you cry) about the problem of English regions crossing over to the 18:55 update and viewers wondering why Huw (or whoever) is not in the main studio?
Well, simply replace the News24-style CSO background with a CSO of exactly how things would look in main studio (window view of newsroom, ivory side banner with usual '6' graphic overlayed etc). For studio longshots use recordings of the ones from earlier that evening. i.e. to get from 18:55 sting to close up of Huw, use recording of 18:00 longshot; and to get from Huw bidding farewell to closing titles, use 18:29 longshot.
If Huw talks live to correspondent during 18:55 update, obviously we can't have side view with plasma screen, so simply use the same full screen board with two windows that UK Today uses!

If Huw Edwards was to do UK Today, why not do it from the main set, by changing the side captions and the background window and sicking in a widescreen with a UK Today logo or something on it, it would look different

I can't believe that never occured to me!
How stupid am I? Typical Scorpio, me - always being over-complicated!
Of course... after the BBC bomb, they put a view of the News24 red wall in the main news set's window. So they could do it for UK Today - d'oh!

Is the last part of UK Today recorded - surely they can't turn the camera around 90 degrees, or whatever, in a few seconds.
I remember someone saying it took about 45 seconds to move the camera round.... so they could easily do it. It's the camera they use to say goodbye which is about 2 mins after end of UK Today

The CSO background for UK Today makes things very strange. Towards the very start and end of the main 18:30 bulletin, the camera is more pulled back than during the rest of the bulletin - so that the desk top is visible in the bottom of the picture, and the presenter is slightly further away. Yet (obviously) the background doesn't look any further away, and you can't see anything that would be further out to the sides of the News24 wall. Weird.
Of course, it's different during Breakfast, when the UK Today bulletins come from the real proper News24 set!
