'Sing Something Simple' - my Dad used to listen to that when he was in his early forties! That and Gardeners Question Time on Radio 4 (which he still listens to) made up his Sunday afternoons.
Whilst I take the Inspector's point about trying before decrying, the main thing that grates with me about Evans is his "sort-of squeaky-shouty" voice, which won't change, whatever the format.
I wish I could describe it better; but I find it overly aggressive, a bit like what you get from the kids on the corner if you dare to tell them off for something. It's as if he's permanently saying "listen to me or I'll kick your head in".
As for somebody to suit the time and current format, might I suggest Mr Edmonds? Trouble is, he's become a bit busy of late with this Channel Four thing.

He was very good when he filled in for Johnnie Walker when he was ill. I suspect that if it wasn't for DOND he'd be taking over the slot, but then again Johnnie Walker only did the programme for 6 months a year (with 3 month on Breakfast) so it might be possible.
Personally, I would have liked Danny Baker to get the slot

Oh no no, Sam Costa or Jimmy Young would be THE perfect choice. With a regular "whats the recipe today Jim" feature and the legal beagle - a must for any journey home in the car!
Failing that, what about two hours of "sing something simple"
Apparenty Noel Edmonds did not prove too successful back on radio 2, but he does have a very very successful Channel 4show Deal Or No Deal which will probably run for as long as The Weakest Link and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.
Mike Stand remembers Sam Costa? Sam had a very successful career on BBC Radio 2 and pre-1967 when it was known as "The Light Programme" with his lunchtime programmes "Accent On Melody".
It was the way of life then which worked well at that time. But now we have to move on. Times and styles have changed.
Perhaps someone with a strong radio background, who's been doing more television in recent years, but would like to move back?
I DO know for certain that a certain Mr Nick Harvey did a very good radio show a number of years ago on a station in the West of England. Great banter, slick, and very good at debate. If anyone knows of his whereabouts, please let Johnnie Walker know.
Chris Evans will do well on Drivetime in my opinion. It may take time but people will enjoy his creativeness.
.....and bringing the thread back around to television. I wonder if his ITV series will come back?

Oh yes, I agree with that Mike. Chris works well on radio but NOT on television in my opinion.
He did once: TV Mayhem, The Big Breakfast, Don't Forget Your Toothbrush and the early TFI Friday were all great shows with Chris on absolutely top form. It's since his break from broadcastng that he lost the gift for TV
