I think there could close bbc three move most of the content to bbc two and move newnight to bbc four? You could tune extend cbbc by two hours for older kids?

"You might have been wondering where BBC Three has gone. We've decided to close it down to show CBBC for 2 more hours a day. If you're wondering what's happened to Newsnight, we've moved it to BBC Four - yes, it's still called that."

If CBBC really needed to be extended an hour or two (which it doesn't), then they could let it eat into BBC Three time - not close the channel down completely.

Congratulations, that's the worst idea of the day.

Do we really need to give our nations lard arse kids another excuse to sit inanimate in front of another screen?

"Our nation's lard arse kids" have had access to 24 hour childrens television since the launch of digital, and can actually view whatever they want at any time now via iPlayer, Netflix, Sky Player and that's before we talk about proper new media.

although I was being glib, there is a serious point:

the 24 hour kids tv channels you mention pretty much built their existence on selling products to children which in the past were very unhealthy and even today encourage a fairly sedentary lifestyle, I just think that if the bbc is truly going to act in the public good, then maybe, there is a better way to do it.

kids are catered for significantly better than they ever were when I was growing up in the 1980s as far as choice goes, not just on tv, but with apps and games on devices. I think if the bbc does have a few more quid to throw at the childrens department, I think it should really be on improving of commissions and reducing repeats rather than just spreading out what they've already got more thinly - I certainly don't think giving kids an excuse to sit in front of the television for any longer is necessarily the best idea, even if it is well intentioned.
