How those suites lasted so long I have no idea. Their suites were almost pre-historic compared with what the UKTV guys across the corridor were using and both suites had bolt-ons galore as new things were needed. I couldn't imagine an equivalent channel like CNN coming from such a facility!
They and the UKTV channels are good examples of why the Broadcast Centre is a good concept (the original concept even before the sell-off) - they came from small area with very little room to expand except squeezing more kit into already packed apps rooms and suites. There's no way they'd have been able to put out the current range of UKTV and Worldwide channels from there
LoL! Haven't seen that photo before - it brings it all flooding back! The UKTV channels were transmitted from control rooms across the corridor from BBC World and BBC Prime. World, Prime and Arabic (the original BBC World Service TV Arabic) were transmitted from control rooms built in around 1994, using Beta SP tape playout, IBIS Landscape automation and one Odetics Beta SP cart machine. These suites were used continuously 24/7 until 2004/5 and were 4:3 throughout their life.
