Fountain's twin studios with a movable door in between at Wembley has been around for MANY years. It was built by Redifusion I believe - who held the London franchise BEFORE Thames. Can't remember if it was built before or after TV Centre - after I think - but not much.
The door takes 30 mins to open or close - and is driven by the same type of motor that rotates guns on battleships.
It is a brilliant idea - and it works very well for Fountain.
The BBC usually claim that TC1 is the largest "single" studio in Europe - as Wembley can't be described as a "single" studio.
The circular design of TV Centre kind of precludes the merging of two studios. TC1 was originally going to be a bit smaller than it is now - but they realised they could make it bigger without ruining the design of the whole building, and did so.
I think that the lack of TC9 (as originally envisaged as a TV Theatre replacement where the News Centre now is) was a real shame - but TC1 does have a lot going for it.
TC1's versatility is amazing this is the same studio that the election coverage comes from. But the audience size just doesn't ive it a good atmosphere compared to other studios.
Bit of a mess with some of the cues this evening..."we're doing this... no we're not... yes we are".... but that's live TV for you!

Fountain Studios where The X Factor comes from is the best large studio in the country.
Although technically its two studios joined together?
(I always wondered why there was no provision made for doing that at TVC..)
Can't Fountain lower a wall that divides the studio or something? It's still one massive space though and Fiends managed to film their London episodes there too. Do the BBC still claim that their Studio 1 is the largest in Europe? Like the article says I bet they're envious of the Fountain Studio.
