Let us rewind back to 2009, ten years a go and look at what Children in Need offered for their telethon night then.

Friday 20th November 2019 on BBC One:

Sir Terry Wogan, Tess Daly and Alesha Dixon hosted for the night - with the stars of Strictly opening the show.

A special edition of the magical series Merlin
A special edition of Casualty
The launch of the official Children in Need single by Peter Kay and "a host of famous faces"
The cast of Hollyoaks rock TV Centre with their tribute to Queen
A peek at the 2009 Dr Who Christmas Special, the final one for David Tennant
The One Show team perform the street dance from Fame
A special edition of Dragons Den
Westlife perform live in the studio
A special edition of Lark Rise to Candleford with Terry Wogan in it
The cast of The Bill perform a rat pack classic
Eastenders cast celebrate the Magic of Motown
BBC Newsreaders perform their special dance and music routine

All that was on before the BBC News at Ten

Was 2009 the one where Terry finally admitted he gets paid - and has always got paid for presenting it?

It's a really dreadful evening. Always has been, always will be.

Tonnes of free advertising for major corporations and the main stars getting a good pay packet for their trouble.

As a show it is worse and I have a theory why.

A lack of light entertainment and mainstream sitcom hits on BBC1 really is a problem. There's little for Children In Need to use on the night. So they have The Hit List and Crackerjack. Lord!

Yeah hence why they hit on the emotional blackmail more than ever.

And you know what, in my 'field', I've never seen a penny of CiN money in any local projects.

They had a young chap in a tuxedo being the 1st presenter on the stage of CIN at Elstree tonight.

After the news, the following was on that night in 2009:

Musical performances from Pixie Lott and Harry Connick Jr
Impressions special from Jon Culshaw and Debra Stephenson
The cast of Taggart and Rebus unite for a one off special
Spandau Ballet perform
Performances from David Gray, Annie Lennox, Madness and Paolo Nutini
Westend performances come to TV Centre with Priscilla Queen of the Desert
Performances from the Nolans, Sugababes, James Morrison, Ronan Keating, Paloma Faith and Alison Moyet

Grand Total revealed at 2.00am ended the marathon

I think one of the big issues CiN has is it isn't the biggest event of the weekend when it airs anymore thanks to Strictly always being in Blackpool and that being a landmark event of the series. I do think it's a mistake not to cross live to Blackpool for their Strictly fix.

Also across the board on these things largely thanks to reality TV the concept of seeing stars do different things isn't the novelty it once was - nothing special about EastEnders does Strictly when a cast member is on Strictly every year.

Fair play though a good opener with something you wouldn't usually see on TV.

Crackerjack was rubbish then and seems to be rubbish again now.

And custard pies? It's 2019.

If they wanted to bring something back why not something a little bit intelligent like Beat the Teacher?
