A mixed night overall, and unfortunately it's not just the emotional ride of song & dance into a tearjerking film that I'm on about.

As a family we sat down with a late tea (chippy tea, it was Friday after all!) looking forward to some entertainment. My biggest issue with the things featured; doctor who, car share, Annie performance, etc. but more using Adi & Tess to open the show. I'm sorry to say that they lacked any form of energy or excitement to start the evening. For us it was a notable shift in the programme when Graham & Mel took over. The presenter delivering the best on the night was most probably Matt Edmondson. He came along, ad libbed, joked and messed around when appropriate but it livened the show up somewhat.

Part of me longed for the days of them having a queue of bands and artists ready to promote their songs following a little interview and them being asked to read out the number.

The BBC have many brilliant assets, they need to play at their strengths. Even though it's a SO Television production, why was Graham Norton not used to do a live version of his chat show after 10:30? Nothing like the longest sofa shambles that they tried for Comic relief but something simple maybe with celebs and big CIN fundraisers.

The second half of the night was most probably the more entertaining with Matt Edmondson holding it all together IMO.

He clearly loves CiN night and is keen, like he is on Eurovision night, to share his thoughts on it.

You said as much in the Red Nose Day thread (continuing the TV Forum repeats that this thread has started) and as I said at the time, actually, he is relentlessly negative about both events and hasn't had a good thing to say about them in years.

Ok. Well. Sorry for being a stuck record. Perhaps I shouldn’t bother posting any more either.

It was notable in the bit about Chris Evans’ charity auctions that Evans did not appear in vision, whilst there were shots of the control room and phone team.

Which begs the question... has Evans appeared on any telly at all since the final Top Gear that he did in 2016? I don’t think he’s presented any telly since then, but has he gone into exile completely, refusing to appear on camera at all?! (Much like Steve Wright, I believe)

He has had a few accusations thrown at him recently, so it's also possible they're trying not to draw any attention to that.

I’m sorry. I didn’t mean for that post to come across as overly critical or serious in tone. I forget text isn’t the best way to convey that.

Chris ran in the London Marathon this year, which was broadcast. I didn't watch it, but he was probably shown or talked to at some point, it's credited on his IMDB.

I don't think he was even mentioned in the pre-publicity. Agree Adi and Tess were not a great choice to start the night and although Tess is now CiNs longest running host its always a brief stint before shes off to Blackpool. Considering Greg James hosted last year and now has a live Friday night BBC1 show he'd have probably been a wiser choice to accompany Tess.

Chris Evans has historically not been part of the Friday Children in Need shows to any significant degree. He didn't ever present the One Show pre-shows when he was the regular Friday One Show presenter ISTR.

I do think he would be an asset to the telethon though should he become involved - like Terry he's a broadcaster, rather than just a presenter, and I think that's what the show is missing now.

Matt Edmondson is massively underrated imho. He’s a very competent presenter.
