The Wogan effect, CiN IS Wogan's baby. like it or not. He's done more than anyone for the charity over the years, the absence of regular referrals by him over the year at Breakfast has to have had an effect.

It's clear that the programme has suffered from lack of interest and motivation in the regions and local radio stations too. Not sure with the deterioration of conditions and relationships at the Corporation whether the format has a future in the current format.

On the Pop fromt, the only people you're going to get to perform are those with content to sell, even Tom Jones has a new album out, do they'll perform readily in late November, if anything CiN atones for the lack of pop coverage on Television at other times of the year.

As for alternatives to Pop, the issue theew is getting independent producers on board which I think is virtually impossible at nil cost.

ITV and Ch4 involvement is good as it does fulfil some PSB role.

Back to Wogan, when he does give up the show, then the BBC have a big problem to deal with.

The set is very nice, but it's amazing how small TC1 looks on screen sometimes (I know there are larger studios in London, but honestly it is a big space!) I can't help but feel that it could do with a steadicam. The handheld walk-up-the-steps during Take That really showed up as rather wobbly. Compare TT on X-Factor last week to the same song done on CiN this year. Despite being in the showcase studio at Television Centre, X-Factor had a great deal more scale and presence than the same song done on the BBC.

I thought Glasgow's contribution at 2130ish was pretty good. Is that the Scottish Exhibition and Convention Centre?

The problem with Studio 1 is that if you have a big set you have a smaller audience, and if you have a large audience you get a small set. It always looks cramped and it makes me wish that they made this studio before Bill Cotton left.

Studio 6. What might have been! Sad

Ahh - no that would have been Studio 9. The 'Stage' at Television Centre refers not to the stage in theatrical or film terms, but simply the stages in which the centre was built. In other words Stages 1-3 were the Scenery buildings, and the main ring, including studios 1-7, Stage 4 included Studio 8. Stage 5 was the 'Spur' incorporating the Post Production and original News centre. Stage 6 was planned to be a replacement for the Television Theatre (Studio 9) complete with fly tower, proper auditorium and so-on. In the end, Stage 6 was built, but as the current News Centre including Studios N6 and N8.

Incidentally, Studio 9 eventually was built as replacement for Pres-A, next to the Blue Peter Garden.

Am I right in thinking that TC1 is a fairly similar size to Xfactor - Fountains A/B? Maybe 30 Sq Feet smaller?

It does seem a shame that it doesn't look as big with set and audience - I don't know whether there's something that ITV do different to maximize the space.

Well you say that but Wogan's "bumbling ol'fool" act has perhaps gone on too long. I still like the bloke and it's clear that whilst he's still passionate about it but I've said for the past few years now, I think the only way the programme can be reformatted completely is if Wogan goes in place of the likes of Graham Norton to present instead (from last night I think John Barrowman's a likely successor!). Also I think a lot should be learnt from when they did Children in Need Rocks The Albert Hall.. Simon Cowell has stated that he would happily do something like that every year and this would be the ultimate way of revamping the format but I guess it comes down to costs and availability.

The problem is that imo, without Wogan the show's income stream will drop, he can get a broad, and I suspect more affluent, indeed more likely to put hands in pockets, viewership and get commercial sponsorship in a way that Barrowman and Norton, both of whom are more than competent presenters, can't.

Evans has been suggested in the past, but he does have his critics, admittedly I am one, which I can see compromising any hosting role he might have.

It's a dilemma which will be difficult to solve.

Apparently the East Street special was an ITV Studios Global Entertainment production for BBC Productions, according to the BBC InfoLine

I think that was the highlight of the night. I think it's the best thing the soaps have done for Children in Need. I particularly enjoyed the Gail scene (don't know the name of the Eastenders character).

I remember when the regional opts used to be later until around midnight.

(Coupled with the local radio as well!)

How come this no longer happens? Cutbacks? That some BBC regions have moved facillity over the years which prevents late operating for mass public events? Eg BBC Birmingham moving from Pebble Mill (where they could control their own security up to a point) to the Mailbox (where they have to work with their security staff, plus the CIN opt comes from outside the BBC)?

Probably due to the shift in format in recent years.

It's all about 'cool' music acts like JLS, Take That, McFly etc performing live, interupting that with 10 minutes of Nick Owen or Harry Gration wearing a casual jumper playing a low budget wacky game probably wouldn't cut it these days.

And the winner is, Andi, with 30 points. Well done her. At least this CIN special of Mastermind was better than the mickey-taking RND 2009 special of Mastermind. in which the contestants got pathetic scores.

I thought Stuart Maconie had got the highest score for celebrity Mastermind (at that point), last year?

TC1 is 10,250 sq ft and Fountain is 13,000sq ft so nearly an extra 3,000 sq ft makes a huge difference in space. TC1 is quite 'square' as well where as Fountain is longer rather than wider.

John Barrowman has his critics, too...

here, for your cringy enjoyment, is a video of ghastly 80s kids singing the full "we are the children" song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCynYHMqd-k

rather interestingly, the entire thing seems far more grand than it does today.

btw there is a thread in requests where money gets given for successful theme tune finding, if anyone else fancies giving money in exchange for a theme tune then pop along Smile

An even more ghastly version including David Essex here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hy-dGGxuCaA&NR=1

Can't remember when they last attempted one of these Nationwide style Regional Bounce songs - possibly for the Music Live day in about 2000?
