Nice little cock up on one of the BBC news pages....

Apparently according to that page, Jason Donovan opened up the event. Well, it was a Joseph - just the wrong actor!

Considering those 7 people are all supposedly professional broadcasters with centuries of combined experience, that was a pretty lazy and pathetic effort by all concerned.

The first round was so drawn out you could tell the item was dying by the time Terry had to guess the second tune. I way willing him to just say "I don't know" and get it over with quickly. His line at the end about his other team members letting him down was quite nice.

I thought Jo Brand really tried her best to hold the whole thing together - she's standing in with Mark Lamaar for Jonathan Ross on radio 2 in twenty minutes time, so that should be interesting...

Tony Blackburn's performance confirmed something I heard someone say (on air) recently (with libelling him, essentially suggesting he was less nice in real life.)

Lol at Fearne interviewing Chris Moyles backstage there

Fearne excitedly: So are you sticking around tonight having a party?
Chris: No, I'm double parked!

Or "Chris: No, I've done my part" as the subtitles incorrectly heard.

Yes - and thank you for clarifying that, because I thought I heard him say double-parked, but when I read the subtitle couldn't be 100% sure I'd heard properly.

*If* he'd said the other thing I thought it would actually have been quite rude - and he'd really behaved himself up until that point (other than having a slight go at Jeremy Vine - but frankly the number of daft things he's done - "Ming's Bling", anyone? - he ought to have had a witty response to that.

And good on Moyles for getting in the sarcastic comment, otherwise I'm not sure even Jo Brand would have been able to produce a vaguely humourous ending.

Ken Bruce (who is, contrary to what you might assume if you've not heard his show, very witty) and Fearne were well behaved contestants too I thought.

It does show you though just how dangerous it is to have two or more egos on a TV show at the same time. I assume the item massively overran as well.

Having worked with Tony i've found him to be a very nice guy, even helped me back out of a tight parking space once, top guy!, but i suppose each to their own and all that jazz

Understood - I'd like to think so to but you know how easy it is to judge people you haven't met...

It really isn't up to scratch this year, is it? To be honest, I think it has gone downhill since Gaby Roslin left. She and Terry worked well together and since Fearne (and briefly Natasha Kaplinsky) took over, things have seemed a bit awkward. I, too, think Terry's a brilliant broadcaster but it seems as though it is too much for him this year. I find the BBC's decision-making process hard to accept. On the one hand, you've got Moira Stuart (58 ) and Anna Ford (64) being forced into retirement because they are deemed to old to read the news (which is far less physically challenging than a live entertainment telethon) yet on the other you've got 69-year-old Terry presenting a highly stressful telethon which really does need a youthful, energetic presenter. What is the BBC playing at?

Terry was fine after midnight, when he was allowed to relax and not having to pretend that he regularly overdoses on stimulants.

It's got nothing to do with age, it's the thinking that the show has to move at hyper-pace, like a two year old running amok.

Of course, if the content of the show wasn't so vapid...It's the same thing with most episodes of the new Doctor Who.

Last night's programme was alright but it was just the usual stuff really - music and silly sketches.

One thing that did annoy me though was the constant over-enthusiastic cheering and clapping from the audience. Couldn't they tone it down a bit? IMO it was far too loud and lasted too long.

I'm going to be the exception here, and say that I still think Terry Wogan is the perfect host for Children in Need . If anything, the problem is with the fact that everything is live - look at the difference between last night's QI special and Buzzcocks - while everyone tried to hold Buzzcocks together the best they could, it did get quite tiresome by the end.

Anyway, why couldn't Simon Amstell do it?

I got FTA satellite so for the first time I can wish to not watch Hugo Duncan and Gerry Anderson.

Not that I watched CIN much. I saw the first 30 minutes if part 1 and next first 90 minutes of part 2. And I have to say...

Buzzcocks was rubbish.

Why couldn't Simon Astell host it as usual? Or could have brought back Mark Lamarr? They could have dropped one of DJ's of each team for Phil Jupitus and Bill Bailey. I could have been better. I was looking forward to that all evening but they things went it was appaling. I would've been better off watching One Foot In The Grave all night.

This was supposed to raise money for CIN, so it is worth doing, but as it's worth doing, it's worth doing WELL.

Why it was even branded under Never Mind the Buzzcocks was silly. The only familiarity was the logo and desks. They should have just called it 'DJs do Battle' or something.

Two comments really.

Firstly, it's good to see that despite all the probelms with premium rate phone-ins and competition fixes in the last 12 months (over which both Children in Need and Comic Relief were implicated), the Great British public still trust and support the cause and the amount raised hasn't slumped at all.

Secondly - thinking about why Children in Need is so crap. Conclusion - the musicians who guest never do anything apart from perform. While all the people from various TV shows usually put together a number, the musicians just do what they do everyday - meaning a very bad 7 hour music show.

With Comic Relief music performances are few and far between - and most popstars who guest aren't there just to play their latest single.

The show got massive ratings last night with an average of 9.4m watching between 7 and 10pm, peaking at 10.9m at 8:15pm. What with this and the total being higher than last year, I expect the same format will continue next year as it is obviously what people want
