Cheltenham Festival on C4

Quite a few things to note (March 2005)

Not a huge racing fan - not a racing fan at all actually - but I always find the C4 Racing team very watchable and watched quite a chunk of their Cheltenham Festival coverage today.

A few things to note:

Arrow Nice graphics - especially the use of the C4 logo. The break bumpers are a bit disapointing though

Arrow Another graphic I've not seen before saw the picture reduced slightly and a list on the RHS of the order the horses were in updated throughout the race.

Arrow Are C4 the only channel to screen sport on analogue in 14:9. I think all the others crop to 4:3?

Arrow Pressing RED or TEXT to access Teletext on 4 and the main index has been rejigged so that RACING and BOOKMAKERS are at the top.

Arrow Finally, C4 Racing goes off air before the final two races of the day. These aren't covered via FilmFour - but have they been in the past?(sometimes free-coverage of events like Cricket on FilmFour was referred to as 4 Extra).

Yes, some racing was shown in the early days of FilmFour.

I very quickly had a look at the interactive service this afternoon and it appeared that there was a "Racing Extra" video stream on there, at the time showing the same as on Channel 4, so maybe that was where the extra races were shown.

I happened to be channel hopping down at my Uncle's this afternoon and noticed RTE1 appeared to be simulcasting C4's output in 4:3 centre cut out...

I'm not sure if the final races were shown via the "Racing Extra" service or not, but I know that the Racing Extra service gives you all the C4 races - but just with different camera angles.

Of course all the races were covered on RacingUK which was unencrypted until racing coverage began.

And I won £4.50 on a £1 bet in the 3:15 - so I'm happy!

Not as happy as the bloke who won £700,000 - but he had to place a £200,000 stake.

And there was one guy who said on Channel 4 he put £20 on Royal Shakespeare to win - he would've won quite a bit had it won!

Anyway, happened to be doing a bit of channel hopping around 6:30 and caught an interview on Points West from Cheltenham, and a pundit gave his tips for tomorrow:

Comply or Die in the 2:35 and
Moscow Flyer in the 3:15.
