Big fan of Screenwipe so was looking forward to Newswipe and it exceeded my expectations. It did seem to point out how the news media wallows in the doom and gloom of the recession. I wish Charlie would pick on Robert Peston who irriates me with his smugness when presenting about the ecomonic situation.
Nothing about Jade Goody - perhaps he's saving that for next week.
Very good show all round and great insights once again.
He mentioned on Twitter that it will be on next week. Probably too late for official confirmation of her death to shoe-horn it in. Also presumably the coverage of her death is more interesting from a critical POV.
That was fantastic. That news special last year showed just how ridiculous news coverage can be, but this topped that by a mile. The best bit was undoubtedly the psychologist on Newsnight trying to explain the fact that the very fact that the news was being reported in this way is probably what encourages these killers to do these things in the first place. Not to mention the fantastic cutting of different British news sources to go with his every point.
What exactly did the Newsnight presenter say after all that? He was about to say hang on a minute, but it got cut before we heard what exactly he said. He was clearly lost for words for a second.
I didnt see screenwipe or read anything about newswipe - but I thought it was pretty good - especially the bit with the FSA man! It seemed a bit like a clever tv burp, especially with things like the blue folder. I did think at times they were swearing for the hell of it, but I'd definately watch it again.
Thought it was very good in places - the psychologist on Newsnight intercut with UK coverage was good. That said, I suspect coverage of a UK school shooting (hopefully hypothetical) would probably be different. Dunblane and Hungerford (not a school) were very different - though that came from a different age.
The point about the peace rally in Northern Ireland was very well made.
Was slightly disappointed with the "news-esque" titles - it felt like they were trying to be The Day Today - but I'm not sure they were quite there, and neither was the set, quite. (The Day Today worked because the graphics were done by a team at ITN during down-time)
Much of the content was good - and Nick Davies makes very good points. Flat Earth News is scarily accurate...
Worth watching definitely.
Not sure what they are using to archive news broadcasts - but loads of the clips had been zoomed a bit and not uniformly (i.e. different BBC clips had been zoomed differently). Wonder if this was to get rid of 14:9 pillarbox bars needlessly?

Isn't that just an editorial choice - they use similar shots on Screenwipe.
