I haven't seen this covered yet, but both ITV2 and BBC4 currently have Channel of the Year banners on their idents.

Which is it, and who awarded it? Or is it a daft situation where one has been awarded it by one media group and the other by another - if you get my drift?!

Yes, the mandatory self-congratulation that even the BBC feels obliged to trumpet...

I can't really call a channel full of Jack Osbourne, Katie and Peter and Glitterball "Channel Of The Year".

Pure guesswork but i'm guessing BBC Four was probably RTS Channel of the Year and ITV2 was Heat Magazines Channel of the Year Laughing

I think ITV2 was Broadcast magazine's channel of the year - ironically beating BBC4 amongst others, not that the casual viewer would know it Laughing

Personally I'd give neither channel of the year. If I had a say it would be between Bravo and FX since both have put out superb programming in the last year.

Bravo bringing the excellent US imports "daybreak", "blade the TV series" and "the Unit".

FX bringing the excellent US imports "the wire", "sleeper Cell", "Dexter" and "NCIS"

Luckily, you're not a member of the judging panel. It's unlikely that either of these channels will ever win a channel of the year title, because they are mainly import channels. The titles usually go to channels who produce a lot of their own content such as ITV2 and BBC Four.

Yes, such great shows don't deserve attention. Katie & Peters baby Diaries however.... Rolling Eyes Maybe they should rethink the judging process (whatever that consists of). What exactly does ITV2 produce that warrants a "Channel Of The Year" accolade FFS? Rolling Eyes

Exactly it clearly cannot be judged on the quality of home-grown products because ITV2's and productions are pretty awful. I think you'll find it's being judged on bringing shows like Supernatural (and other US imports), films and general entertainment.

Why luckily? They are some cracking shows that literally pee on 99.9% of all British TV TV production dramas from a great height. I agree they probably will never win channel of the year although not because they mainly import but because they are not available on freeview. Plus with such a massive proportion of the UK thinking that EastEnders is quality, shows like Big Brother, dance X and any number of singing competitions with Simon Cowell drawing such huge audiences. Most of the UK television viewing population would not know a good show if it slapped them round the side of the head.

ITV2 won both Broadcast Channel of the Year 2007 and Broadcast Entertainment Channel of the Year 2007.

The criteria for the award is as follows :

"The award goes to the most successful channel of the last year and can be entered by any channel – including new entrants to the market. The judges will look for evidence of the channel’s success in its market; its branding and connections to its audience, and originality in commissioning, scheduling and marketing."

And this was why ITV2 won it :

"ITV2 has won the prestigious Channel of the Year award at the 2007 Broadcast Digital Channel Awards. The channel beat BBC4 (which was highly commended), Paramount Comedy and Sky One to the title, and was praised for its strong identity and new-found confidence.

"ITV2 takes risks, is capable of surprising and it does the numbers. It is really pulling away from the pack,” said the judges. ITV2 also won Best Entertainment Channel ahead of BBC4, FX, Paramount Comedy and Sky One."

So they call Peter & Kate, Corrie and Emmerdale repeats, and Judge Judy "taking risks". Hah!

However, it's better than what BBC Three come up with (2 Pints every sodding night of the week)
