Grauniad.co.uk: The TV Station That Knows Where You Live

I know he's from the Gnarudin, but is there any truth in this - would / should the (frankly highly suspect) ITV2 get kicked off 106 / Freeview 6 if a relevant local station was available?

Do you reckon there's actually a market for city/county based TV - Channel M seem to be doing all right, but where else could support it?

And which cheeky bugger already registered channel6.co.uk? Laughing

A forward thinking individual who obviously thinks it will be worth something, one day:

If I were incharge (which, perhaps thankfully, I'm not Wink ), I would have three strata of broadcasting: p.s.b., independent and commercial.

The p.s.b. would remain as the B. B. C. and Channel 4. (which although is commercial, would be in the p.s.b. stratum)

Then I'd have the independent stratum which would include channel three, a new six, a new seven and a new eight.

Then the rest of the channels would be commercial.

The independent stratum's new phase would begin with giving the channel three contractors rights to a radio station (in much the same way they get rights to digital space). This would be helpful to UTV and SMG, perhaps, which have also diversified into radio. Also, OFCOM would force ITV to run their regional franchises more regionally (in much the same way as ATV was forced to re-name to 'Central' to avoid losing their contract).

ITV Network would have to contribute work towards an ITV Bureaux.

Then Channels 6–8. would be founded. They would have to contribute towards an ITV bureaux too. ITV Networks (channel three) and channels 6–8. would be able to take and give to the ITV bureaux.

For example Sky may take channel 6, virgin media take ch. 7., and a consortium of production companies take 8. They'd all be connected by the ITV bureaux, so could co-produce the grander productions, but they'd be able to compete separately too. Also Britain would have the regional channel three still.

However, fortunately, I'm not in a position of power, so my plan may never see the light of day. However, if anyone is in a position of power reading this, and is inspired by my three-stratum approach, wah-hey, go ahead and use it!

Dundee had a Channel 6 for a while around about 2002.

It mainly broadcast pop videos, and episodes of cult children's tv like Henry's Cat and Rhubarb.

They did also have inserts of film reviews from DCA ( www.dca.org.uk ) and documentaries about local bands etc.

I think after the initial "grant" the funding ran out and that was that.
