I remember reading that there was a plan to set up a new channel called Channel 6 by 2005 but it was rejected, I think one reason was something to do with Sky One's status on the EPG. My question is has anyone heard anything about a proposal or frankly do we or don't we need another national channel with the current 5 already having extra channels e.g BBC3, More 4 and Five Life

I haven't heard anything about this - was it a terrestrial or digital channel being planned?

I thought "Channel 6" was an umbrella term used for local TV stations like Solent TV & Channel M.

Either this relates to the "Channel 6" rumour that BSkyB were supposed to be planning for Freeview, although this of course became Sky Three.

The only other Channel 6 I can think of is the one in the Republic of Ireland. Which I always think is oddly named since they don't have a "Channel 5" ( RTE1, RTE2, TV3, TG4.......Channel 6 Shocked )

Any plans for a new analogue channel would have dissipated now... as DSO is nigh...

That's why I asked if it was digital or analouge, as another terrestrial one would be completely pointless with analouge signals being turned off starting next year.

No the umbrella term for those stations is simply RSL, although a few called themselves Channel 6. The first called themselves TV12!!
