I thought Mel was brought in to add a bit of contrast.... Cilla's female charm with Graham's male charm worked in the original so now that Paul is presenting, they've gone for a role reversal.
Plus, as has already been said, they probably want to stay somewhat true to the original but make it relevant to today's audience.
I hope Paul O'Grady does not have another heart attack, because they are recording FIVE episodes in one day, Sunday 21st May, according to SRO Audiences website at 1.45pm, 3.00pm, 4.15pm, 6.30pm and 7.45pm. Christ! So are they recording "as live", or is this new version of Blind Date just 30 minutes in length and not a typical one hour show with commercials?
Odd scheduling. I mean, Saturday at 7:30 is classic Blind Date scheduling but apparently the following week it's on a Friday, and I understood it to be going out every Friday.

They're really pushing this series I'm sure it's going to do well in Channel 5 terms. I've seen adverts in bus shelters too. I think they've got the only host you could have who isn't Cilla they're not exactly the same people but it's a bit like how Gogglebox has been able to interchange Craig Cash and the late great Caroline Ahern and it still feels the same.
