They still have not sorted out what happens to the DOG during a 4:3 programme. It's simply too far in from the edge of the screen and is very distracting. If UKTV can make their DOG's tight in the corner no matter if the content is 4:3 or 16:9, why do other networks find it so difficult to do.
I see they haven't moved the 16:9 Milkshake DOG either and it's where it used to be before the mini-refresh of Channel 5's graphics.
When I worked for Channel 5 TX (2012-2014 - can't remember exactly when this happened, but I think it was some time in 2013), they did try to sort this out once and for all. They brought in new DOGs - well, bugs as they're called at C5 - for both 4:3 and 16:9 programmes. As soon as I saw them being tested, I said that they were a vast improvement in terms of placing... but possibly slightly *too* eager in terms of pushing the bugs *right* to the corner of the screen, and I thought there would be complaints due to overscan issues.
They were put to air... and after a while, they decided to revert back to the previous version of the bugs. I never found out why, but I'm guessing that they did have problems with the overscan. Why they reverted back to the originals rather than just tweaking - *especially* with the 4:3 bug - I will never understand. (I haven't seen any 4:3 shows yet since this mini-refresh, but if it *is* still in the same place, that's utterly ludicrous. It drove me utterly loopy every time we broadcast 4:3 material.)
I would also point out that this is the problem when a TX suite is run as "playout" rather than "presentation". Personally, I think if someone in TX mentions a potential problem it should at least be listened to and considered rather than being lost in the ether, but what do I know? The channel made nearly every single decision, far away from the TX suite. Luckily, I now work somewhere where we *are* actually listened to, and have a bit more power to get things right.
