Filling the void of BBC Three on TV would be a very strong start for 5Star
I noticed in the crap ads section of the Evening Standard today that there was a casting call for a new dating show on 5*. Original shows on the channel are few and far between so I wonder if there'll be a bit more of a push for the channel post the upcoming C5 refresh. I hope they give it a new name, the brand is incredibly cheap and as a channel it's a real mish mash of programmes and could definitely do with a bit more of a focus.

Total agree with both of you.
5 Star has no focus. It's a pick n mix and an odd good movie.
5 Star always struggled to gain an identity for itself because of all the above so let's hope a rebrand and some viacom funding aids that and as you rightly suggest - once BBC Three goes off air it's time for 5 Star to shine and fill the void somehow.

5* IMO should really become the home of US comedy and female skewing shows. 5USA hasn't really changed much since its the home of US drama and that's why it's been successful. 5 have added more original shows to the channel like Chicago PD and Mysteries of Laura but they should look in the cable space for original shows.

How about rebranding 5 USA to 5 Drama and 5* to 5 Comedy. Then have all the American imports and cheap daytime made for TV movies and old classic UK/American dramas on 5 Drama and get a hold of some old 80's and 90's comedy shows (Roseanne etc.) for 5 Comedy and try and get new emerging comedy shows and do a deal with Comedy Central for FTA rights after they get pay rights.
They could do a lot more with the 2 spin-offs that they have, and at least one of them has no real brand or focus. It just seems like it could be much better used then it is currently.

That sort of pigeonholes the channel into a specific type of programme though… might work fine now, but in a few years there'll be new people who want the channel to be about other things, maybe have its own original programming, and they'll have to rebrand it again. I think the trend is to move away from specific names like that (see the renaming of The Biography Channel to Bio and now Lifetime) or to just strip them of their original meaning (see MTV)

I think we've had it confirmed it's going to be called 5 STAR?

No more pigeonholed that 5 USA is with American content. At least this way all the drama programmes they already show along with the ones that 5* show can be in one channel and it doesn't have to be just American. That gives 5* the chance to be any channel it wants. Comedy would be an ideal place to start as they have some as it is, can buy the rights to other old series' cheaply and they also own Comedy Central so could move shows around the channels to suit. It could even be a comedy/youth channel hybrid. Basically anything other than what it is now - a directionless mess.
