I actually watched C5 for the first time in a while this week. So surprised at how documentary orientated the channel is in peak, it was an evening of cop docs and a 90 min crime doc about James Bulger which was actually very good.

Inside Chernobyl last week was also very good and was also their highest rated documentary since Michael Palin in North Korea.

This thread loves to slag off Channel 5 but I think they've come a long way in recent years.

In some ways it is arguably more BBC4 than C4 nowadays - they have certainly found a formula which brings in an audience they are happy to cater for.

Still a little bit of an identity crisis with the better quality docs somewhat overshadowed in public perception in comparison to the marathon blunder shows or celebrity bios, but I think perception is slowly but surely turning.

Couldn't agree more - Channel 5 isn't for just the likes of Paul Ross pretending he remembers hilarious moments from the '70s in four-hour compilation shows.

The Chernobyl documentary - Inside Chernobyl with Ben Fogle - was excellent - and not just because the name almost rhymes. An absolutely fascinating bit of television, which didn't just focus on the 'juiciest' bits like what happened in the plant itself, but also visited the local schools, leisure facilities, housing and hospitals to see how life would have been affected for the people living nearby, giving background on Pripyat and its history, as well as examining the effect the disaster has had on the geography and local wildlife in the area in the following 35 years.

When you consider the health and safety issues the production crew had to overcome to put this documentary together, not only in filming it overseas during a global pandemic, but also spending a week in a radiation exclusion zone, it's really an incredible feat and they ought to be lauded for it.

A tremendously high quality documentary, which would have been at home on any channel.

The HD bit of the C5 dog appears to have gone.

It was still there during the lunchtime soap showings but not now there since 5News at 5pm.

Perhaps a wrong button pressed rather than a decision to remove it, I'd say.

It's still '5' today, looks like they've joined ITV, UKTV and Sky in ditching the 'HD' tag.

Is Channel 5 SD now a direct downscale of the HD feed? That could explain why it's been dropped - to prevent "HD" appearing on the SD channel.

I think its fantastic how much Channel 5 have invested in drama.

Sheridan Smith will now star in a new C5 original drama called 'Teacher' along with Kelvin Fletcher.

Though TBF Sheridan Smith is in something practically every other week.

You sure do know how to put a negative spin on things....

Just a minor observation about Channel 5: Like the BBC, Channel 5 appear to be pushing the fact you can watch their channel's online though My5.

Recently, announcements over idents have increasingly started to mention My5 ("now on Channel 5, and My5..."), but this week all trailers seem to have also now started to include a mention My5 (similar to BBC who have "...on BBC One and I player").

All trailers, if they don't already mention the fact you can "stream the full series now on My5", now have "and stream on My 5" (or if they are really short of time, just "and My5") with an on-screen mention to match.

Wonder if it's the first step to trying to get back to bid on the crown jewels list.
