Channel 4's 21st birthday

WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED? (November 2003)

So yesterday was C4's 21st birthday. After last year's failure to mark their 20th anniversary we were promised the occasion would be celebrated this year, and there was talk of a rebrand to go with it. But what happened on the day - naff all!

I admit C4 haven't got a lot to be proud of at the moment but they could have marked the event somehow. Even if just reruns of first Countdown and Brookie. But no. And the same tired "one size fits all" idents. Are we getting a rebrand or not?

Seeing as all rumours about a rebrand only ever exsisted on this website, there was probably never going to be one in the first place

Yup, and the only thing I can see happening is the promotion of Hollyoaks to five nights a week, which is more a contractual thing I imagine since many commissions on C4 run from November to November. That too explains why Brookie is going at such a time too.

Its a pity they're not celebrating their birthday, but then perhaps that is more a strategic move as the channel isn't one to necessarily hark on about being old, instead promoting itself as being youthful and innovative. Why then did the 10th and 15th birthdays get a mention? Different management at the time perhaps? I dunno!

As for a rebrand, I reckon we'll know either way if More4's branding uses the blocks logo. Talking of their branding, whatever happened to the fantastic 4Active branding, with that truly impressive take on the 4 blocks logo?

Channel 4 should really be ashamed of themselves. They are one of the most innovative channels of our generation, and they don't even bother to celebrate their big birthday.

Hats off to Countdown though for mejntioning it.

Channel 4 did a big "4 is 15" week around their 15th birthday, so another anniversary retrospective is probably seen as well underdue.

I think it was all about the change in managment. Just as programmes, and the channel itself has changed. Its sad that they haven't celebrated their 21st birthday, though I don't think that celebrating the channel is on top of mark thompsons agenda.

Tomorrow night at 10:40 (to 12:20). Nice to see that Channel 4 have bought it forward slightly for the last episode. Usually its been on at about 11:30.

I don't know, it's disappointing. A 20th birthday is a big thing, a 21st is also big. S4C made a big deal of their 20th, even ITV (which truly does bear no resemblence at all to it's former self) is planning to celebrate it's 50th in a couple of years. Something should have been done either last year or this year.

That said, it's nice to know that the blocks is staying for the time being. I did respect C4 as being the only broadcaster to recognise that you shouldn't go about blindly replacing long standing iconic corporate logos to fit in with the whims of branding 'experts', and it was disappointing to hear that they were apparantly planning to ditch it this year. Hopefully next year will see some new presentation still based on the blocks.

Are you sure that wont just be London? I'm sure it would be unfair to confuse viewers in places other than London, for example Tyne Tees, which celebrates it's 50th in 2009.

Oh yeah, I'm sure that would really confuse viewers! Rolling Eyes

They'll be celebrating 50 years since the birth of commercial television (ITV), which was in 1955. There are already special programmes planned, and I expect there will be some birthday idents, as they're going to make a big thing out of it.

Even this year they celebrated their 21st with a documentary about S4C's founder.
