Hi all,

yes a Channel 4 trailer for "My Name is Earl" during to-day's (New Year Day's) showing of Lost Horizon 1973 on Channel 5. It sort of threw me, I thought the Channel 4 / Channel 5 merger was off?

Was it in a regular adbreak? In which case, Channel 4 just bought air time on another channel to advertise a programme. ITV and Sky do the same.

It may have been an advert that channel 4 bought, the easy way of knowing is if it contained any scheduling info, day and time, usually.

Nothing unusual anymore, I've heard adverts for ITV1 on the radio and seen adverts for Channel 4 programmes on abc1 of all places.

But do expect channels owned by the same parent company to advertise each other on those channels though, hence Disney Channel adverts on abc1 for example.

It may be considered strange that in the multi-channel world we live in, broadcasters have to pay each other to get message to the viewers to know that Programme X is on Channel Y at Z Time, but when the audience is as fragmented as it is across 400 channels, it was inevitable that somebody would think "Okay, let's advertise our programme on that channel".

Quite common now. The only rule is that if your advertising on a channel you don't own, you can only stipulate the day the programme is on, not the time.

I know the likes of Living are always complaining about this rule, saying it's unfair ITV1 can say what time programmes are on ITV2, ITV3 etc - but not tell it's viewers when a programme is on Living.

Didn't ITV and Channel 4 used to advertise on each others' channels all the time? I'm sure I remember Channel 4 mentioning News at Ten every day and things like that.

Yeah, back when Channel 4 was considered to be "ITV2" in a lot of respects.

May I ask why that could be considered strange? It seems perfectly logical to me that you should need to pay if you're trying to divert viewers away from one channel towards another. Smile

The UKTV channels seem to be doing a lot of advertising on other channels at the moment, giving us the chance to see their stripey trailer endboards in full 16:9 glory for a change. See, they do know about widescreen.

Was wondering why UKTV were advertising days rather than times! And as for the 16:9 endboards, isn't it about time we were treated to the idents being broadcast in the 16:9 they were created in?

This was when Channel 4 was considered as an 'ITV2', it was also when ITV also used to sell Channel 4's adverts until the end of 1992, so both channels would often cross promote each other. Even after Channel 4 became Independent from ITV in 1993 they still cross promoted each other, albeit less until the end of 1998, when by that time both ITV and Channel 4 has Multi-channel services.

It was nice in the old days when you had announcements like Starting over on Channel 4.....but here on Granada..... or Starting on ITV shortly....

But it is common for channels to do this, the one doing the rounds at the moment is the UKTV Gold advert for Wogan Now and Then.

One of the terms of the first Channel 3 licences awarded by the ITC was that the C3 franchisees promoted programmes on Channel 4. This requirement was removed in the mid-to-late 1990s.

See page 19 of this PDF:
http://www.ofcom.org.uk/tv/ifi/tvlicensing/c3/carlton_west/Carlton_Westcountry_Telev.pdf

I'm assuming that there was a similar requirement in the IBA days, although the ITV companies did have a vested interest in Channel 4's success (IIRC they each got a share of the advertising revenue).
