Wasn't just cigars, I've got some videos from the late 80s with adverts for pipe tobacco too. Seems bizarre that even that was allowed for so long, but then all forms of tobacco advertising are long gone in this country anyway. Even the packs will be plain from next year!
Still had the bizarre thing when I was in Germany that they sell tobacco at the checkout like we have chocolate (which has never been the case in this country certainly during my lifetime), and they still had tobacco billboards. And in the US they sell cigarettes in pharmacies, and all they have in terms of health warnings is a line of text on hidden the side of the packet. Feels like some places are well behind us!
I was quite surprised (if Wiki is to be believed) I thought smoking (per head) was lower in the US, than here.
In fact they are position 51 in the charts, we are 73, just above Sweden and Finland, and way above Norway (at 91) Odd, when I visit Nordic areas, feels like everyone except me is a smoker. Germany at 45 feels about right
Bear in mind tobacco advertising being
on TV carried on with F1 sponsorship lasting into this century !
