Wasn't just cigars, I've got some videos from the late 80s with adverts for pipe tobacco too. Seems bizarre that even that was allowed for so long, but then all forms of tobacco advertising are long gone in this country anyway. Even the packs will be plain from next year!

Still had the bizarre thing when I was in Germany that they sell tobacco at the checkout like we have chocolate (which has never been the case in this country certainly during my lifetime), and they still had tobacco billboards. And in the US they sell cigarettes in pharmacies, and all they have in terms of health warnings is a line of text on hidden the side of the packet. Feels like some places are well behind us!

I was quite surprised (if Wiki is to be believed) I thought smoking (per head) was lower in the US, than here.
In fact they are position 51 in the charts, we are 73, just above Sweden and Finland, and way above Norway (at 91) Odd, when I visit Nordic areas, feels like everyone except me is a smoker. Germany at 45 feels about right
though !

Bear in mind tobacco advertising being visible on TV carried on with F1 sponsorship lasting into this century !

I used to think the US was ahead of us when it came to smoking bans too, when places like New York and California had them years before we'd even thought about them. Once I looked into going to Las Vegas on the other hand, it sounds like going there would be stepping 20 years back in time, having to walk through smoke-filled casino floors whether you're using them or not.

Smoking is reducing in this country quite fast though, I think it's at about 18% now, when you only have to go back to the start of the last decade when it was over a quarter, and the start of the 90s when it was about a third. Even only 5 years ago it was 21%.

I think we've gone a lot off topic here now though!

So C4 premiered the #RonsealAdBreak tonight - three minutes of a bloke painting a fence. What was more interesting was it was bumpered by the C4 logo, broken in bits of course. Started painting it with the opening bumper, done by the closing bumper.

Idents still look rubbish though - and even if they were good to go this long with just 4 variations (plus the clock) seems pretty poor form nowadays.

Shouldn't that have been posted in the "John Logie Baird has Invented Television" thread?

The ad was really weird, and the guy at the end basically said we were stupid for watching the ad... in which case we won't bother watching any more, sure C4 would love that.

Also agree about the idents, still not a fan of them at all, especially the microscope one with that creepy looking creature at the end of it. What is it supposed to be?
They might not have been so bad if the idents progressed with new additions in the group creating some sort of story.
I think really though they should just use all the cgi idents as those look good. Like the ones used during Christmas.

I agree the previous look was brilliant, and they could have easily continued it with a few new additions to the idents to keep it fresh. I never got sick of those idents, yet these now I was sick of after a month.
