This is good news! I think Channel 4's current look is starting to look very stagnant and is in need of a change.
Any more images of the new look?

I don't think so. They still had the original stripes idents launch at Easter, with the new batch introduced on New Years Day 2000.
Someone said above that the "Alternative Christmas" idents will be the last in the current format, but it seems stupid having new idents then relaunching.
Also, the C4 schedule is the most Christmassy I've seen it in years, with Christmas specials of Shameless, Teachers and 100 Greatest - so not really "alternative".

Did Channel 4 actually have Christmas idents in 1999? I only remember seeing the current ones in 2000...

Well, that makes it clear - THE FAMOUS LOGO IS STAYING. It's just being redesigned - the square box is gone!

Not before time I say. I've never been a huge fan of the current set of idents introduced last year (hearbeat, flash lights etc), although the version before that was brilliant.
I think this also means the C4 logo has a good future. If they were going to replace it, now would have been the more sensible time before the analogue signal is switched off to get it estabhlished. And a new logo could have worked if it was well designed logo, not just a text based logo.
I am glad they havent totally replaced their logo, but surely it has to look better on screen. That image is ghastly!

dont think im picking on you, but its the 1st comment saying that there isnt a new logo and your sad.
Channel 4 could NEVER change their logo. It is a well-known logo, like the [B][B][C] logo, the NBC peacock and things like the MOTD theme and Newsnight theme, they are just stuck like that forever becouse of their well-known status,

Whilst I agree with your sentiments, remember that the BBC logo has changed a few times over the decades!

Ahhh, ASCII tv logos! Used to do this on MHP!
[ ITV } ORACLE { C4 ] was my favourite...

It's debatable, however, whether that's an actual change or a tweak of an exisiting (text-based) logo. All of the versions are easily identifiable as (moreorless) the same brand.

I think, on screen, they may well be a lot more clever than is obvious here. One of the things that intrigues me is the bitI've circled - which definitely makes it look like the logo is, in some way, integrated with the actual scene.

Remember though that will be one ident out of the collection. Some will work, some won't - and all will probably look better animated.
I do think it would be a good idea though for C4 (and other stations) to just air a handful of idents for the first few months, then replace them with another set (in the same style) after six months or so, rather than having dozens of idents to begin with.
Therefore, C4 can keep the same theme, but gets a mini-refresh twice a year - and if an ident doesn't work, it's consigned to history a few months later.
I guess C4 have done this to some degree with the square idents, replacing sets completly in 2000 and 2003.
