Very nice.. how do they make these idents? Some are obvious but some, including this one, looks too real to seem computer generated?

It wasn't really used that much in the first place - until Des announced he was quitting and I think they thought they'd better used it up.
I would hope it will resurface with a different image - I'm sure if they can create 3D "4s" all over the place they could sort that out. It be a very good ident to use for theme nights and seasons just by tweaking the image rather than creating a whole new ident.
Though talking of which, the New Music Month trailers have all been pretty good with the broken "4".

Haven't seen it recently and I know it featured Des Lynam on Countdown who obviously isn't there anymore, which could have been the primary reason - I'm hoping it'll be revised at some point (i-e, changing the display on the telly, tweak the audio to the new sound) and then re-aired.

Yes, I think I've mentioned on occasion before that numerals seem to work so much better (one distinct exception of a non-numeral working well being the balloon, but then that was the trademark globe's most flexible incarnation and the music was just right).
As a logo and an icon it was a little too complicated. Whenever they tried to use the globe (in any of it's incarnations) as a logo away from the ident it looked bad.
It could never be in the same league as logos such as the '4', the '2' and the Granada 'G'
As good as the C4 branding is, one thing that does let it down is the way that the '4' is used in a diffrent way in the idents than it is everywhere else - with a computer generated 3D '4'

Initially I might have agreed - but I think they complement each other rather well actually and it means they can changed one style without having to change the other.
It also distinguishes the idents from the promos - which is probably why the idents are so good!
