Channel 4: Macro Regions

this probably has been asked before... (September 2006)

How are the Channel 4 macro regions sorted out Geographically, I know there's a few, but I'm not sure whether it's based on the ITV structure or more of a National or pan-Regional structure.

I know this has been mentioned before but I couldn't help but wonder as last night I stayed over at a Hotel in Penrith (not too far from Carlisle), the local BBC News was Look North NE&C, and the ITV region was Border. When I was watching Channel 4 I couldn't help but notice adverts for products such as The Scottish Sun , and it got me curious whether the Border ITV region in Channel 4 terms is classified as Scotland if you get my drift.

Either that or the Hotel TV was dodgy.... Laughing

Ah, thanks for clearing that up, I'd have just guessed you'd class Carlisle as Northern England, but anyway....

They were all, until recently, played out via the ITV companies on behalf of Channel 4. Obviously that's now stopped ... But 4 did used to rely on ITV a bit during its infant days.

ITV had to fully finance C4 from opening in 1982 until Dec 1992, that's why they inserted the commercials. From Jan 1 1993 C4 formed the six macros, and played out the commercials themselves. Initially from a Sony LMS system at Charlotte St, before moving to their present base at Horseferry Road

Ah yes, that's right ... didn't they give them a percentage of ad revenue?

I guess "recently" is relative. AIUI C4 assumed responsibility for advertising playout in Jan 1993, when the new ITV franchises (Carlton, GMTV, Westcountry and Meridian) launched.

Yes, at my age, that's rather recent.

Does anybody know which region is broadcast on digital services in Wales as NTL place "Channel 4" on 104 and it is also receivable on DTT and DSat. Traditionally I suppose a Wales region wouldn't have existed due to S4C having that airspace.

The map on the C4 Sales website isn't that specific.

As far as I know, there are six Channel 4 advert regions:

London
South/East
Midlands
North
Scotland
Northern Ireland.

All of which are available on DSAT on the frequency 12168V 27.5 2/3 - they're all labelled "Channel 4" though, so you won't be able to see any difference until the adverts.

What‫

Portsmouth isn't west of Southampton, it is to the east, down the A 27. I think it is refering to Bourne mouth.
