Someone from Channel 4 was obviously onto the BBC since that report was published, since the quote no longer matches the linked article. As originally written it seemed to indicate that "4Channels" was the name of the company, which it is not (it is "Channel Four Television Corporation"), but merely a label for the channels (other than Channel 4 itself) which it operates.
Yes, 4Channels is E4, More4 Film4 etc.
The company made a profit of £44 million. Channel 4, the channel lost £42 million
I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing - if Channel 4 (the channel) is making a big profit then it's doing something wrong - it doesn't exist to be populist. It's probably a good thing that they can let the commercial ventures to subsidise the main channel.
Panic over - time to watch some Come Dine With Me on 4OD then...
In terms of watching Channel 4, I regularly watch The Simpsons, occasionally watch Come Dine With Me, Deal or No Deal, Countdown, and stuff like Four Rooms and Secret Millionaire. I can't say I ever watch Channel Four before 3 o'clock, where BBC One is the order of the day.
I don't think Channel 4 is in any trouble yet.
channel has started to make a bit more of an effort as there now broadcast these nice classic and sometime Black and white films. But I don't believe them making this loss proves there doing the right thing. Ch4 placing all its main us shows now on E4 ( most of the time) and then repeat them on Ch4 at strange times.
Personnel I think Ch4 should be revised to included more high class shows mixed in with lifestyle. There could place the daily show and Craig Ferguson etc at 11.30 - 1am that would help, plenty to fill up the listings.
The lack of money from Big Brother and the repeats of CDWM and programmes similar isn't going to help their issues. I bet the broadcaster is kicking itself really at the success Channel 5 have had with their baby. If only they'd messed with the format themselves a couple of years prior to axing it, and they too could have been having this success and double Celebrity runs.

It's only been a success for C5 because the channel didn't have anything that would skew that many younger viewers so regularly beforehand. The ratings are much lower now than they were on C4. The only reason why they're bringing the celebrity series back this summer is to offset the inevitably poor ratings the main series will get this year.
Big Brother had had its time on C4 and the channel needed to move away from it, even it was contributing a hefty amount of income. The results posted are the first in a decade without BB. They were inevitably going to show a loss, the channel hasn't had to schedule that many hours of addition programming over the summer since 1999. They are essentially having to learn what their audiences want at that time of the year all over again.

Its also not been mentioned that Channel 4 are lacking a distinct flagship show. They always had Brookside which was shifted out of the way for Big Brother, but they haven't really found anything of that level since, so they don't have anything to build their schedules around and it becomes a bit of nothingness.
