Bristol does have a thriving independent production hub which has been key in supplying C4 so having a presence there makes sense. I think it is also a similar story in Glasgow - Kirstie and Phil's production company is based up their at least.

I agree with Jon their spread is just about right.

Totally agree with you. If Channel 4 are being serious about being "4 the UK" they should have some sort of base/hub in each region.

I knew they wouldn't choose Belfast as we're at a disadvantage geographically for a start but it's their loss. Hopefully we'll get more films and tv shows similar to Game Of Thrones coming to us instead.

What would they do in these hubs? Channel Four make no programmes, they are a commissioning operation, and as such have a small workforce of around 800 people. You can only split an operation so far before it ceases to be viable.

Bristol is fairly near to Cardiff and also is better in terms of the South West of England. Belfast might be an ideal location for show but it’s a bit isolated. In terms of spread of locations I think they’ve got it about right.

Yep - but that hasn't really answered my question ? Of the 800-ish people employed by C4, a large chunk of them will be admin, advertising sales, compliance and corporate types - not core programme commissioners and execs.

I'm not sure I see how a split across Nations and English regions happens if it is going to take impact on-screen commissioning teams?

https://www.channel4.com/commissioning/4producers gives you an idea of the groups of commissioning teams, and they aren't huge teams (fewer than 20 people max in each genre team - some as small as 3 people)

Well obviously the split is just political pandering, so I don’t really know what difference it will make to the content or exactly how it’s going to be executed. But obviously plans should already be in place in terms of how it will work.

What do you mean by what would they do in these hubs? Somehow I don't think Channel 4 would have even considered Belfast if they setup a hub with nothing happening.

Well surely if they weren’t planing on doing anything in them they wouldn’t mind dumping one in Belfast for political reasons.

This announcement seems to have fallen under the radar a little. (Or I haven't seen it until now, anyway!)

Channel 4 has announced the location of it's new regional hub in Glasgow. The Garment Factory in the Merchant City. The building certainly suits the Channel 4 style - as does the district. However, could be logistically challenging for the staff. Most indies are based in Pacific Quay, which is a bit of a distance away.

Not as far away as Horseferry Road though.
