I believe this is launching on Freeview next Friday and indeed some people have seen 4HD captions from those transmitters which will air HD. Is it also correct that in South Wales S4CHD will start at exactly the same time? I am dismayed. I didn't think that there would be any programmes on S4C made in HD and it also hasn't been on satellite before. So what exactly is going to happen here? Is it just going to be a simulcast of digital S4C, which to most people in South Wales is neither use nor ornament. My understanding is that the analogue version will cease on Wednesday so it wont be a simulcast of that.

It really is annoying how broadcaster think that S4C is "Channel 4 Wales" i.e. an alternative - it's nothing to do with Channel 4 whatsoever and it is of no use to the majority of monoglot English speakers. I'm sick to death of local adverts promoting programmes on S4C in English (on radio for example) as if we can sit and understand them. I thought digital was meant to put an end to this business. Surely it would make more sense to air Channel 4 HD programmes instead of SD S4C content

I can understand S4C shows because I can read English. End of argument.

Yes the last analogue welsh transmitter, Wenvoe, switches over on Wednesday so S4C analogue will close down.

However I believe that S4C HD will essentially be what S4C analogue was - a mix of C4 and welsh programmes

Yes, the appalling bodge-up of the last 28 years will continue for HD viewers. AIUI the S4C analogue playout suite is being revamped, and will be used to for the S4C-HD service. Obviously work on that can accelerate after Midnight on March 30th, the last S4C analogue programme to be transmitted will be 'Shameless' 23:00hrs to 00:00hrs March 30th

S4C analogue must currently have a very small audience and with South East Wales not being known for welsh speakers the welsh language programming even less so. I wonder if they'll even bother marking the switch off

Oddly their website has an analogue schedule for Wednesday: http://www.s4c.co.uk/e_listings.shtml?dt=2010-03-31&service=s4ca

Although of course there are the non Sky, non Wenvoe DTT, non Mendip analogue viewers in South Wales unable to receive C4 England, who will still be using S4C for C4 programmes, I agree Welsh S4C programming viewing in that area must be tiny.

All comes down to bad planning on Freeview. Isn't S4C HD too just a simulcast of S4C Digital, so it won't be like the traditional S4C channel?

I suspect S4C would favour S4C HD being in the model of the analogue channel as it looks like they're going to lose out a lot from not having the C4 programmes in it's portfolio, so a hybrid HD channel would enable them to continue that.

Officially at 11.55pm on Tuesday night after Shameless, I've had a look at the schedule for Tuesday and there's not many English programmes on S4/C, just the C4 morning programmes, Deal Or No Deal, Countdown and indeed Shameless, not as many as there once was.
