I think this is the right step for Channel 4, leave the expensive Dramas to the likes of BBC, ITV and Netflix. The market is different to the 80’s/90’s so it’s only right an ‘edgy’ channel should focus on a younger audience more by doing more online. In fact I think they should have done this sooner, like the BBC with BBC Three.

What do you think good people?

TBH, it almost harks back to the original remit of Channel 4 which was to produce edgy, experimental programming other commercial broadcasters wouldn't touch.

Of course, when it started filling its schedules with property porn, much of that original remit was lost.

From a selfish point of view, I just hope it's stuff that a 46 year old like me would like to watch Smile

I can't see the likes of Location, Location, Location, Escape to the Chateau and Grand Designs being axed as they still do quite well. Drama they'll still make as they can do solid business with the right talent so they're unlikely to get rid of them either.

I wonder if/how it will affect their current family of TV channels. Obviously C4 will be fine, but what about E4? That channel is aimed more at younger viewers which are also the demographic they're aiming the online commissions towards, will E4 just continue as it is?

I guess it depends how much these channels all bring in for C4, if they're all profitable then I guess they won't change much at all.

The only thing that needs changing is 4Music's name, as it's no longer a music channel and instead is basically E4 2. Call it T4!

Or merge it with E4. I mean, like you said, it is quite literally E4 2.

But about this online thing? I'm fine with it, as long as it doesn't go too far.

Worth remembering the difference to the BBC is these ventures are commercial so as long as E4 is profitable it is going nowhere.

Although linear TV is not as dead as some make out those is probably right for C4 - they're able to capitalise on being one of the few places in the streaming market advertisers can connect with viewers.

I Never thought I’d say this, but at this rate, I’m pretty sure we’ll be seeing a lot more “All 4 Originals” in due course...

4Music may end up going the same way as channels like VH1 UK, and get closed down, so that they can focus on E4 and the other music channels.
