Channel 4 have announced that they are cutting their programme budget by 60m and will no longer make new programming for the 11pm slot

The future of PSB programmes like Channel 4 News is still under threat and 200 jobs have also been axed

My thoughts exactly.

They have made comedies and music shows for the post 11pm slot in the past, but generally speaking no commercial broadcaster is making shows for a post 11pm slot.

It's all imports, repeats and films, with occasional football highlights (in the case of ITV). Generally speaking broadcasters are reducing the number of slots for original content. Look at ITV's Saturday night schedules, it effectively ends at 9pm with a film repeat.

I think ITV have simply given up past 10.30pm most Weeknights, tonight being an exception with the documentary about Brian Clough (which should be in a better slot) but as you say it's mostly repeats, imports and Films. It's probably one of the main reasons why a Friday edition of News At Ten has been reintroduced.

As for Channel 4 catering for a 11pm programme, can't say I've seen much there in the past couple of years, maybe ten years ago, but not now. They've basically given up the Friday night comedy slot to an extent aswell, it used to be wall to wall sitcoms from 9pm, now there's one at 10pm thats pretty much it. Having Friends and Will & Grace end didn't help them much to be fair.

That's fairly old news - they gave up the 11pm slot about 18 months ago. In the year or so before that they had a phase of commissioning quite a few things to strip across the week (like the Anatomy programmes), but nothing that's exactly missed.

Around the same time they also said they wouldn't be commissioning much for the weekend either, but Sunday nights seem to be coming home to programmes that in the past would have gone out on weeknights - Come Dine with Me, The Secret Millionaire and Chris Moyles at the moment.

Though if Channel Four ditch their PSB requirements they'll need a totally new set-up. Like the BBC they are a public service broadcasting corporation - though unlike the BBC they are advertising funded, and they have a different remit.

Channel Four can't just ditch their PSB responsibilities without major changes to broadcast law.

C4 confirming today they'll be axing Big Brother after BB11, although Angela Jain is quoted as saying she'd rather it went this year following the tenth anniversary. I just can't believe they're not even willing to give it the slightest chance to make a recovery this year, especially considering they're committed to nearly 200 hours of it over the next couple of years anyway.

If it is heading for the axe then what a shame.
Like you said it's shocking Channel 4 won't give it a chance. To me, it looks like they're crapping all over Big Brother just like Brookside!

It's been given many chances and none of those have really worked. It's a dying format now imo.
