Last night & Tonight (September 2005)

I'm watching Channel 4 in NI on SKY, and both last night and tonight have noticed occasional audio drop-out. It lasts probably less than a sec and seems to occur once every few minutes.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Yes, I've noticed a similar problem with Ch 4 on Sky in the not too distant past.

On a separate note, I do wish they'd sort out that sync problem they have when switching to and from broadcasts from ITN.

I've not caught any junctions in or out of C4 News recently; are they getting frame rolls?

Pixelised/digital breakup occurs a few seconds before and after the cut to/from ITN. This has been happening on Ch 4 for a very long time.

That's not just a Northern Ireland problem, it's national.

It's caused by the switch between 16:9 from Horseferry Road and 4:3 from Grays Inn Road.

If you're watching in digital centre-cut on a 4:3 television, all you notice is the glitch; if you're watching on a 16:9 television, you see the glitch as the ratio changes.

There must surely be a way of cleaning this up? The picture disturbance before and after is VERY noticeable and amateurish and often cuts up the opening seconds of the headlines voiceover.

Pixelisation/breakup when cutting between sources does sound like some kind of synchronisation problem.

I would not have thought it at all likely that this is caused by the aspect ratio switch! I've never noticed picture break-up on C4 when changing aspect ratios at any other time.

As for noticing the aspect ratio switch (leaving aside picture break-up), C 4 usually use a U fade to disguise the switch. Are they not using a U fade in/out of ITN output? Or do they just use a cut?

Pure speculation: but perhaps when leaving ITN they make the first event a manual (as opposed to a fixed time, or follow on event), this would of course not be unusual for a live programme; if this is the case, is their aspect ratio switching frame accurate on manual events? Not all automation systems are frame accurate when dealing with manual events.

I agree. What I've seen doesn't appear to have anything to do with ratio switches. Ch 4 ratio transition is virtually always invisible to the viewer. They're one of the best at handling it. This is definitely a sync problem. I just don't know why it has persisted for so long though.

Channel 4 have always used cuts to and from ITN. Thinking about it, they generally cut to black out of all idents and cut to programme within one second or so.

With ITN broadcasts the sequence is usually:

- ident
- breakup of ident during last two seconds
- cut to black - pixelisation (including elements from ident)
- cut to ITN - pixelisation breakup/slight audio distortion evident for first two secs or so of broadcast

How long has this been happening for?

This has been going on certainly for the last couple of years, maybe longer.

It doesn't happen for every ITN broadcast but does occur quite a bit. They do seem to be able to avoid it. I don't know anything about their set-up but it seems as if they have to do something special to avoid a picture disturbance each time they need to switch to ITN...and sometimes they just don't bother.

If you can hang about til about 12.30am...

...I have an example here to hand. It's where Ch 4 slotted in their first News Report on the London Bombings. Hopefully Real Media will be able to handle the breakup.
